Match Preview

Duo worry for Gills Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler once again has doubts over two key players for the visit of Southend. Left-back Andy Nutter and winger Dennis Oli missed the win against Burton at the weekend with groin and hamstring problems respectively and both are doubtful. The pair will be monitored ahead of Tuesday's game but will not be risked if not 100% fit. Chris Palmer will continue at left-back. New signing Bruce Inkango was on the bench against Burton and may be thrusted into the starting line-up to give the Gills more width. Tony Sinclair returned to the bench after a back injury and could make his way back into the defence, while goalkeeper Alan Julian will have to settle with a place on the bench as Lance Cronin continues between the sticks. Southend new signing Nathaniel Jarvis is pushing for a start. Jarvis signed on loan from Cardiff last week and will be hoping to make his full debut after coming on as a late substitute in the win over Hereford at the weekend. However, strikers Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock both scored at the weekend and are likely to keep their places. Captain, Craig Easton is out for at least another fortnight while Mark Phillips and Sofiene Zaaboub have returned to training this week but Tuesday's game is likely to come too soon for the pair. Matt Patterson and Scott Spencer will not be considered for the trip to the Priestfield Stadium as manager Paul Sturrock is looking to send them out on loan.

Wasteful Gills held Cody McDonald, Adebayo Akinfenwa and top scorer Chris Palmer all wasted good opportunities as Gillingham drew for the fourth time this season - 0-0 against Southend. The Gills threw everything forward after the break but failed to make their supremacy count as they were held by Paul Sturrock's battlers. Jack Payne created the home side`s first chance after five minutes when his huge throw from the right-hand side was met by McDonald, whose acrobatic effort was palmed away by Southend goalkeeper Glenn Morris. Having survived that early scare, Southend began to impose themselves on the game and in the 37th minute Blair Sturrock found Josh Simpson in space on the right-hand side, but he blazed harmlessly over from 18 yards. Gillingham started the second half the strongest with McDonald firing wide twice in the opening five minutes. Akinfenwa came closest to breaking the deadlock after 70 minutes, firing inches wide from 20 yards after good work from substitute Luke Rooney. Moments later Palmer was denied by Morris from 25 yards as Southend held firm for a point.
