Match Preview

Shrews look for play-off final revenge Goalkeeper Ben Smith is fully-fit for Shrewsbury`s trip to Gillingham but will have to settle for a place on the bench as Chris Neal keeps hold of the number one jersey. Smith has been in the treatment room nursing a groin injury of late but has enjoyed a solid week of training and will replace Hakan Duyan among the substitutes at Priestfield. Defender Danny O'Donnell and striker Nathan Elder remain long-term absentees with respective groin and knee injuries. Winger Lionel Ainsworth and midfielder Mark Wright made their returns in last weekend`s 1-0 win over Rotherham and are again likely to start against the Gills, who meet Shrewsbury for the first time since winning 1-0 in the League Two play-off final at the end of the 2008/09 season. However, it is a different story so far this term, with Town unbeaten in the league and Gillingham still looking for their first victory. Dennis Oli and Curtis Weston could return to the Gillingham squad for the clash with the League Two leaders. Weston has been sidelined with a thigh problem but came through a reserve team game against Brentford in midweek and could be in line to feature. Striker Oli scored twice for the second string after recovering from a hamstring problem and may also be back in the squad. Stanley Aborah will not feature at the weekend as he is still short of match fitness but goalkeeper Alan Julian is expected to be on the bench once again despite having a slight fracture of his hand. Winger Andy Barcham is still not available due to an ankle problem while Garry Richards and Simon King are long-term absentees.

Match Report

Palmer at the double for Gills Chris Palmer struck twice as Gillingham earned their first win of the season by betaing Shrewsbury 2-0 at Priestfield. The midfielder scored in each half as the Shrews suffered their first defeat of the campaign and lost top spot in the process. The hosts were quickest out of the blocks and took a 12th-minute lead when Palmer bundled home after a long throw from Jack Payne caused panic in the Shrews defence. And minutes later it could have been two when visiting keeper Chris Neal produced a superb save to deny Danny Spiller. Five minutes after the restart the Gills had a great chance to double their lead, but Neal saved Adebayo Akinfenwa's penalty after Mat Sadler had handled. Palmer though made no mistake from the spot on 59 minutes, sending Neal the wrong way after Craig Disley had chopped down Spiller. Town missed a glorious late chance to get back into the contest when Mark Wright shot straight at home keeper Lance Cronin from point-blank range.
