Match Report
Germany set up a last-16 clash with England on Sunday afternoon after deservedly beating Ghana 1-0 in an entertaining encounter at Johannesburg's Soccer City Stadium.
The Black Stars also won through to the knockout stages of the tournament as Serbia's 2-1 defeat to Australia ensured they finished as runners-up in group D. Ghana will now face the USA on Saturday evening.
Mesut Ozil scored the only goal of an entertaining encounter on the hour mark but both teams had a wealth of opportunities to net a hatful of goals.
It is highly likely that Ghana will be Africa's only representatives in the last 16 as South Africa, Cameroon and Nigeria are already out and Ivory Coast, barring a mathematical miracle, will also exit the competition on Friday.
Germany threatened first with Cacau getting in a shot in that was easily gathered by Richard Kingson. In the 11th minute, Lukas Podolski's cross was turned towards his own goal by Jonathan Mensah only for Kingson to make another smart save.
When Ghana threatened, a great move ended with Asamoah Gyan finding himself in space inside the area only for Bastian Schweinsteiger to get back to dispossess him before he could pull the trigger.
As play swung from end to end, Ozil should have scored in the 25th minute when he was free inside the area only for Kingson to produce another fine stop.
Gyan then got his head to a corner but, although the ball beat the static Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm was in the right place to clear the effort off the line, although it may well have been off his arm.
Just before half-time Bastian Schweinsteiger curled in a free-kick that evaded everyone but Kingson was alive to the danger and pawed the ball away from his goal.
Ghana had a superb chance to take the lead in the 52nd minute when Kwadwo Asamoah was clean through but, although his shot was on target, Neuer made a good stop to deny the Ghana striker the opening goal.
The all-important goal came after a lengthy spell of German pressure. It paid off when Ozil lashed a shot from just outside the penalty area past Kingson.
Although Lahm produced another fine block to deny Andre Ayew a certain goal, both teams finally appeared to accept that the scoreline would benefit them both as news filtered through to the stadium that Serbia were losing.
