Tottenham's poor start to the season continued as they failed to beat Fulham despite dominating the match. It was a game Martin Jol's team would have been expecting to win, but as with the defeat at Manchester United last time out, missed chances proved costly. This was their third league game without a goal. After a slow start, the home side gradually took control. Their first meaningful attack came on 21 minutes, when Jermaine Jenas was brave to take the ball down with his head despite Franck Queudrue's foot being high, but Robbie Keane just failed to reach his throughball. Jenas filled in on Spurs' right flank for the injured Aaron Lennon, who had a knee operation on Saturday, but looked comfortable playing in a role he often occupied during his Newcastle United days. It was his cross which led to probably the best chance of the half, when Teemu Tainio put a shot inches wide after having an initial attempt blocked by Zat Knight on the half-hour mark. Fulham had their backs to the wall, and it showed when defender Ian Pearce and goalkeeper Antti Niemi got into a complete mix-up a minute later. Pearce headed behind for a corner when Niemi could quite easily have claimed, and Ledley King went close at the near-post from the resulting set-piece. Spurs continued to apply the pressure and had another great chance four minutes before half-time. Jenas was again the provider when he found Benoit Assou-Ekotto at the far post. He cut inside his marker and forced a good low save from Niemi. Cottagers manager Chris Coleman clearly laid down the law at half-time and his side came out looking to attack straight from the whistle. Tainio found this out to his cost on 48 minutes when he was dispossessed by Moritz Volz, who went on to put a shot inches wide of goal. However, Mido should have broken the deadlock from a gilt-edged chance two minutes later. Ledley King picked out the unmarked striker out with a great cross, but Mido could not react quickly enough and failed to connect with a header. He nearly made up for it eight minutes later, when, from an acute angle, he slammed the ball against the crossbar after Tainio's pass. Mido's chances seemed to kick his team back into gear, and Assou-Ekotto went close with a 66th minute free-kick after Queudrue brought a strong Didier Zokora run to an end with a foul. Four minutes later the Ivory Coast international surged into the box but blazed his shot over the bar. The chances came thick and fast for Spurs but they sensed their luck was running out when Pascal Chimbonda had a header cleared off the line by Luis Boa Morte on 76 minutes. Substitute Jermain Defoe then forced Niemi into another good low save, but despite the relentless attacks, a goal failed to materialise. And Volz may even have nicked it for Fulham at the death when he forced Paul Robinson into a good save.
