Match Report

Both Newcastle United and Fulham could turn the relegation battle on its head this weekend when they meet at St James' Park.

Despite looking down and out at the beginning of the month, a late equaliser against Blackburn two weeks ago and then a narrow victory over Everton last Sunday has brought Fulham within two points of Bolton in 18th place.

Meanwhile, United have collapsed since Christmas, failing to win a single league game in three months, although three points this Saturday could see them move seven points clear of the relegation zone.

It was in fact Fulham that United last took full points from back in December when a 90th minute Joey Barton penalty saw off the Cottagers.

Both managers are now heralding the beginning of a renaissance, with Magpies boss Kevin Keegan picking out England striker Michael Owen as the man to save them this year.

"A lot of people have been questioning him because he is a big-name player but he won't stop scoring if you give him chances," Keegan insisted this week.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson pointed to the 1-0 win at home to Everton as a turning point, arguing that "confidence comes when you're playing well and winning".

He was backed up by experienced midfielder Simon Davies, who spoke of the clash with Newcastle as an opportunity for the club to build on the success of last week.

"Newcastle are struggling and if we can go there and perform well and they feel the pressure from their crowd then we might have a chance, but every game is going to be difficult from now on," Davies told The Times earlier in the week.

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has been ruled out for the Magpies, leaving Steve Harper in the United goal for at least six weeks while Given recovers from surgery on his groin.

The Magpies could include new Senegalese signing Lamine Diatta and fit-again defender Peter Ramage in the squad to face the Cottagers after both played in a midweek reserve team fixture.

Fulham themselves have no injury problems and could well stick with the squad that brought the club their fourth league win of the season less than a week ago.
