Match Report

Fulham believe the great escape is on after they answered critics who said relegation was a certainty with a fighting 2-0 win over Reading last weekend.

The Cottagers, who had looked dead and buried following a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland the previous weekend, secured three precious points courtesy of goals from Brian McBride and Erik Nevland.

The first away win in over 550 days - almost two full seasons - boosted survival hopes at the west London club as they moved to within four points of safety.

However, manager Roy Hodgson is remaining realistic and has reminded his players that they can't afford another slip-up if they are to avoid playing in the Championship next season.

What is on Fulham's side though is the visit of a team who, much like 12 months ago, make the trip to Craven Cottage with half an eye on midweek Champions League action.

Last season's 1-0 victory over a much-weakened Liverpool in the closing weeks of the campaign is widely credited as being the result which kept them in the Premier League.

Several other managers whose sides were fighting for their lives at the foot of the table were furious with Rafael Benitez's decision to rest the majority of his top stars, but Hodgson certainly won't mind if his counterpart does the same again.

Only injured goalkeeper Antti Niemi is unavailable to the Cottagers as a season blighted by injuries appears to have taken a turn for the better at a vital time.

With fourth place in the table virtually guaranteed and a Champions League semi-final with Chelsea on his mind, Benitez is highly likely to use his squad to the full at the weekend.

The likes of Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Javier Mascherano, Sami Hyypia and Ryan Babel could be taken out of the firing line ahead of the first meeting with Chelsea on Tuesday evening.

Second-string performers Peter Crouch, Yossi Benayoun, John Arne Riise, Andriy Voronin and Sebastian Leto could all be drafted into the starting line-up as Benitez shuffles his pack.

The Spaniard will be glad to focus attention back on to the pitch following a week when the club's hierarchy has seen fit to continue their very public spat in the full glare of the media.

Several reports have suggested Benitez is growing tired of the boardroom wrangling which has overshadowed another strong European campaign and that the former Valencia boss will look for pastures new in the summer.

However, Benitez is keeping his cards close to his chest as he looks to pilot the Reds through their remaining four league fixtures with as little drama as possible.
