FRANCE 1 - 0 ENGLAND: Nothing special from the English as they go down to a first defeat under Capello here in France

A decent spell here from England at the end with Bentley and Downing seeing a good deal of the ball on the flanks. There has been no sign of danger from their crosses though and France can break again

Bentley worked himself some space for a cross but he can't find an England shirt. Two minutes of extra time to come

A sloppy cross-field pass gives England a throw-in deep down the French right and a chance to pour forward

A good break from France too, but Cisse can't finish it off despite powering past Ashley Cole and breaking into the area

Good Ribery run down the right results in a hard shot which James does well to hold onto. England break well though and win a corner but France clear

Crouch again holds the ball up well and sends Downing through on the left but his cross is, again, easily held by Coupet

Crouch was used well here and Downing found himself on the end of a deep Bentley cross but the Middlesbrough winger sent a weak header back across goal and France scrambled clear

A familiar sight now for England fans as the national team resort to using Crouch as a target man or passing sideways

Bentley with the ball down the right but there is a distinct lack of options for the England midfield at the moment and the ball is lost

Djibril Cisse comes on for the exciting Anelka

Another move down the England left but it's another Downing cross which is easily caught by Coupet. Still no real danger coming from the English

Owen was fed through on goal by Crouch but the Newcastle striker was well offside

A good chance for Ribery as the Bayern Munich man was given space to shoot from 20 yards but his shot was weak and off target

A hopeful cross from Downing is dealt with by the French defence before Barry concedes a free-kick while challenging for the loose ball

Malouda played Anelka through into the area but Lescott does well to shield the ball out of play

England are struggling for possession now as France begin to shut up shop and keep the ball

Ribery then Anelka - France's best two players tonight - have shots on goal but neither trouble James

France continue to make the most of a stretched game but they too are finding good chances hard to come by

Bentley whips in a cross and the Blackburn man looks to make his mark as Beckham's most likely successor. It's not the best ball on this occasion though and France clear

First change for the home side, as Trezeguet goes off and Sidney Govou comes on

A slight mix up between Beckham and James almost let in Anelka but the American-based midfielder cleared just before the Frenchman could steal the ball

Ashley Cole and Downing combine well down the left but Cole's final cross is poor and Coupet claims with ease

A menacing break led by Ribery ends with an Abidal shot which flashes well wide but England must be careful of throwing to many men forward at this stage

Anelka continues to trouble the England defence but he is eventually forced into over-hitting a through ball and England clear

The second half certainly has a greater pace to it than the first but England continue to play with a degree of hope that an end product will come

England appear to be looking to play more direct now but they are allowing France more space and Malouda almost makes them pay as his low shot from 20 yards skids just past the post

Anelka does well to get onto a long pass and the Chelsea man takes the ball into the area, shadowed by Ferdinand, but his shot goes just over from a tight angle

A well floated cross was met by Crouch but he couldn't keep the header down and Coupet watched the ball fly over

A good spell in and around the French penalty area but Rooney's header from a Barry cross isn't strong and goes straight into Gregory Coupet's arms

Good move down the French right led again by Ribery but his cross is easy for James to take

No spark from England yet tonight and it could end up costing them. David Bentley and Theo Walcott are exciting options on Capello's bench

Strong, skillful play from Anelka helps France break away following a poor corner routine. A shot comes in from Malouda inside the area but James gets down well to save

Anelka finds himself through on goal and goes down! Penalty to France! Bad challenge from James who should have been first to the ball

A long throw from Eric Abidal causes some panic before France rush back in with Anelka

England too are beginning to lack creativity as the French clamp down at the back

France need some new ideas and are trying to play through the talented Ribery but Hargreaves is being an effective shadow

More good work from Gerrard, pulling the central defenders out wide, but Ashley Cole is offside as play moved to the left

England continue to maintain a slow, dare I say Italian-style, grip on the game. Joe Cole wins a corner which Ferdinand heads back across goal to Gerrard, whose diving header is off target

Gerrard this time plays the ball out to the right where Brown's deep cross is met by the Liverpool captain but his header goes narrowly over the bar

The ball broke for Rooney and Gerrard in the French half and the attacking duo had the chance to run at the French back line. Instead, Gerrard curls a weak shot well over the bar from 25 yards

That rhythm is a slow one though and the crowd whistle with frustration as England put together another 10+ pass move. A happy site for the traveling English fans

England slow the game down well, keeping possession for a time before France win the ball and do the same. This match is settling down into a rhythm now

Joe Cole and Barry work well down the left now though and a low cross is fired over in front of the French goal but nobody is there to apply a finish

England have been shut down in the last five minutes thanks to some poor passing and good French pressure

Malouda again finds space and plays the ball into Anelka, who turns inside the penalty area but doesn't hit the shot well and James saves easily

More good work from Malouda as he breaks in behind the England back line but Ferdinand tackles the Chelsea midfielder and England clear

Wes Brown's foul on Malouda gives France a free kick from the left. Good delivery from Franck Ribery, the whipped cross finding Anelka in space but the Chelsea hitman heads wide

No joy from Beckham's corner. He and Gerrard especially are enjoying themselves early on, closing down quickly and forcing the French into mistakes

Good work from Gerrard on the left wing opens play up on the right side where Beckham gets the space to deliver his first cross of the game. It's into the near post and headed behind for a corner

Malouda was almost gifted enough space for a shot from just outside the England box but Terry closed him down quickly

Beckham looses possession before chasing Malouda down and regaining it, showing some early energy

England fend off an early French surge but their counter-attack is cut short as the home side win a free-kick

France begin the match in front of their own fans

France are without some star names, most notably Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira. William Gallas, Nicolas Anelka, Claude Makelele and Florent Malouda all play their football in England, with only Gallas not a Chelsea player

There are also questions over Rio Ferdinand's selection as captain, ignoring the likes of John Terry and Gerrard who are captains at club level. Experience and form has again won the goalkeeping debate, with David James selected
