Match Preview
Preud'homme lauds Zenit FC Twente coach Michel Preud'homme believes Thursday's Europa League opponents Zenit St Petersburg belong in the Champions League. The Dutch champions have already seen off Russian opponents in the last round, claiming an impressive 4-2 aggregate win over Rubin Kazan, but Preud'homme thinks domestic champions Zenit are another step up in class. "They are club at the Champions League level," he said in De Telegraaf newspaper. "They are strong on all fronts. If we win that would be a fantastic achievement. "Zenit have many advantages over us. They have a budget three, four times as high, everything is there. "Therefore, we are really now the underdog." Twente go into the first leg of their last-16 tie without striker Bryan Ruiz, who has not sufficiently recovered from a muscle problem. That will be a blow for Twente, even if the Costa Rica international has so far struggled to hit the heights he reached last season. The 25-year-old scored 24 times in the Eredivisie last term; he has just eight so far in the current campaign. Preud'homme explained, though, he was not prepared to risk the striker, with Twente still fighting for a league and cup double. They trail Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven by three points with a home match against them still to come and are through to the KNVB Beker final where they will play Ajax. "It is irresponsible to let him play," said Preud'homme. Twente are also sweating over the fitness of veteran midfielder Denny Landzaat. Zenit, whose domestic league is yet to get under way, defeated CSKA Moscow 1-0 to win the Russian Super Cup at the weekend. They were trailing 3-1 with 50 minutes of their last-32 tie to Young Boys remaining before scoring three times without reply to go through 4-3 on aggregate. They will be without Russia midfielder Sergei Semak for the trip to Holland, and the return leg a week later, because of a broken foot.

Match Report
Twente in box seat after win FC Twente coach Michel Preud'homme watched his side make a mockery of his pre-match comments by taking a giant step towards the quarter-finals of the Europa League with a thumping 3-0 victory at home to Zenit St Petersburg. The Belgian had played down expectations ahead of the match by claiming Zenit belonged in the Champions League and branding his side underdogs. But his players proved otherwise as a Luuk de Jong brace either side of a Denny Landzaat effort put them firmly in the box seat ahead of next week's second leg in Russia. At 2-0 down, the visitors might have still fancied their chances at home, but De Jong's second deep into injury-time all but killed off their hopes. Twente were familiar with Russian opposition, having knocked out Rubin Kazan 4-2 on aggregate in the last round, and they appeared to have the measure of Zenit in the opening exchanges. The Russian domestic season has yet to get under way and, although Zenit beat CSKA Moscow in the Russian Super Cup last weekend, they looked distinctly rusty tonight. Both sides struggled to carve out clear-cut chances tonight until the hosts went ahead in the 29th minute. Nacer Chadli sent in a cross from the right and De Jong guided a finish high into the net from the far side of the six-yard box. Douglas then headed over from Theo Janssen's outswinging corner as the Dutch side looked to press home their superiority. Zenit responded with several balls into the Twente danger area, but the hosts' defence dealt with them comfortably. Bruno Alves had a shot stopped by Twente goalkeeper Nikolay Mihailov at the start of the second half before the hosts doubled their lead in the 56th minute. Alves cleared Janssen's free-kick delivered from the left, but the danger was not over as Landzaat fired a shot across keeper Viacheslav Malafeev and into the bottom left corner from 18 yards. An away goal for Zenit would have changed the complexion of the tie, but they rarely threatened the Twente backline, crosses or shots from distance which were easily dealt with all they could muster. And instead it was the hosts who added a third in injury-time, De Jong heading Janssen's left-wing cross low into the net to leave the 2008 UEFA Cup winners with a mountain to climb to make the last eight.
