Match Preview

Porto gear up for CSKA visit Porto boss Andre Villas-Boas has called for the club's fans to project a feeling of calm when CSKA Moscow visit the Estadio do Dragao for Thursday night's Europa League clash. The Portuguese side take a slender one-goal lead into the second leg after Freddy Guarin's strike earned them an impressive victory in Russia. Villas-Boas knows, though, that the tie remains very much alive, with CSKA unbeaten in the competition until last week. He told a press conference: "This is a dangerous game. If CSKA score it will create anxiety among the players, so we have to maintain concentration. "The help of supporters will be important for the players. They should approach the game with calm and support the team forward without generating anxiety on the field. "The empathy between players and fans is essential as we face one of our toughest opponents." Porto and CSKA are familiar foes, with the pair having been drawn together in the group stages of the Champions League in 2004-05 and 2006-07. So far the Portuguese side have had much the better of the rivalry, winning the three games in Moscow and coming away with goalless draws from both clashes in Porto. A repeat on Thursday would suit the hosts just fine, and if CSKA are to break the sequence they must score against Porto for the first time. The Muscovites do have fond memories of Portugal, though, having won the UEFA Cup in 2005 with victory over Sporting in Lisbon. Villas-Boas has lost only one of his 10 European matches in charge but he is keeping thoughts of further progress in the competition to the back of his mind for now. He added: "There are big European teams present in the quarter-finals. We must go step by step and first we have to face CSKA. "Only then can we think about future opponents. We know that the team is strong as a whole. The players are all motivated and are extremely competitive." Villas-Boas will be without Maicon, Alvaro Pereira and Mariano Gonzalez but Cristian Sapunaru, Sereno and Souza are back in the squad.

Match Report

Treble bid still on for Porto Porto's pursuit of the treble continued as they progressed through to the last eight of the Europa League with a 2-1 home win over CSKA Moscow. Having taken a one-goal lead back to Portugal with an impressive win a week ago, Andres Villas Boas' men got off to the perfect start when Hulk gave them a first-minute lead. Things improved 23 minutes later when Fredy Guarin put them 3-0 up overall and, despite Zoran Tosic pulling one back for Moscow, Porto's pursuit of the league, cup and European trophies remains in tact. Just 16 seconds had elapsed when Eugeni Aldonin brought down Fredy Guarin, and, from the subsequent free-kick, Hulk`s fizzing effort evaded everyone and went in off the woodwork. Vagner Love had the chance to get his side back on terms on the night with a header, but was unable to do any danger, before Tosic took aim from distance to similar effect. Porto took advantage of the Russians being unable to take their chances too, and doubled their lead after 24 minutes. Sergei Ignashevich's header back to Igor Akinfeev was awkward, and forced the keeper to fumble. In the confusion, James Rodriquez nipped in to cross, missing out Falcoa but finding Guarin, who rammed home his third goal in as many games. Falcoa and Hulk then saw efforts miss the target as Porto probed for more goals, before, in the 29th minute, Tosic left Helton with no chance as he finished off an Alan Dzagoev pass, Jorge Rolando and Falcoa both missed chances for the home side after the break, while Eugeni Aldonin should have done better when presented with a chance to pull the visitors level on the night. Porto were now settling for chancing their arm from distance, Hulk the main protagonist, while Rolande had a `goal' chalked off for using his hand to convert. Vagner Love and Mark Gonzalez had fruitless efforts from outside of the box, but it was too late for Moscow to pick up any late momentum and do anything to prevent Porto seeing out the tie with some ease.
