Barca target early boost
Barcelona take on FC Copenhagen knowing a victory will secure them a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Barca took over top spot in Group D with a 2-0 home win over FC Copenhagen a fortnight ago, and that has left Pep Guardiola`s side on seven points - one clear of the Danes, five above third-placed Rubin Kazan and six better off than Panathinaikos.
Therefore, with only two rounds remaining after this week, Barca will guarantee themselves a top-two finish in the group if they can down FC Copenhagen at the Parken Stadion.
Barca playmaker Xavi admits securing qualification so early would be a boost, saying: "That would mean we could rest some players, but it won't be easy to beat Copenhagen."
Lionel Messi added: "It'd be good to get a win so that we can practically forget about the Champions League for a while."
The 2009 European champions warmed up for the trip with an impressive 5-0 home mauling of 10-man Sevilla at the weekend.
The Catalan giants have not had the best of form at the Nou Camp so far this season, but they put on an impressive showing to down Sevilla thanks to braces from Messi and David Villa, plus another from Dani Alves.
Messi's double took him to 14 goals in all competitions this season, while Villa moved onto six and eased some of the pressure that has been building on the Spain international following a relative lack of success in front of net this season.
Guardiola said of the 40 million euro summer signing from Valencia: "We never doubted him. He has played for Sporting (Gijon), for Zaragoza, for Valencia, and scored goals for all of them, so we knew his signing was a guarantee (of goals)."
More good news for Guardiola was the return of Xavi following a troublesome Achilles problem.
Xavi was substituted after an hour, but Guardiola said after the match the World Cup winner was in perfect shape for the game against to FC Copenhagen.
Xavi himself admitted he was still suffering some pain but felt he could have played the full 90 minutes against Sevilla.
"I felt very good, I was very happy," he said on his club's website.
"I felt nearly 100% again and I'm optimistic about being able to play in every game, although that will depend on the injury."
Guardiola took a 19-man squad with him to Denmark today, with the fit-again Gabriel Milito included.
Goalkeeper Jose Pinto is missing, though, as he serves a two-match European ban after being found guilty of gross unsporting conduct during the previous encounter against FC Copenhagen.
The Danish club reported the 34-year-old to UEFA alleging he imitated the referee's whistle in a bid to trick striker Cesar Santin into thinking he was offside.
Despite their loss at the Nou Camp, FC Copenhagen are still in a strong position in Group D having won their first two matches.
That defeat was also a rare setback for Stale Solbakken's side, who have been in magnificent form this season.
In the Danish SAS Liga they boast a 14-point lead at the summit following a record-breaking start that has seen them win 12 of 14 matches, drawing the other two.
Barca held by Copenhagen
Barcelona will have to wait to book their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League after being held to a 1-1 draw by FC Copenhagen at the Parken Stadion.
Barca knew a victory in Denmark would guarantee themselves a place in the knock-out stages and the two-time reigning Spanish champions looked on course to achieve that after taking a 31st-minute lead through Lionel Messi.
However, second-placed FC Copenhagen went down the other end and drew level almost immediately through Claudemir to earn a share of the points - although they survived a big let-off in the final minute when Barca substitute Pedro Rodriguez hit the post.
The result leaves Barca still top of Group D on eight points, one above FC Copenhagen and five clear of third-placed Rubin Kazan with two games remaining.
Both sides went close early on with Claudemir and David Villa each hitting the woodwork.
Brazilian Claudemir was the first to be denied in the third minute when his 25-yard thunderbolt bolt clipped the top of Victor Valdes' right-hand post.
It was Villa's turn 18 minutes later, the Spain international latching onto a brilliant pass from fellow World Cup-winner Andres Iniesta before seeing his low shot crash against the far post.
Two more of Barca's world champions then joined forces in the 28th minute to create another opportunity, Xavi's free-kick finding its way through to the unmarked Sergio Busquets near the penalty spot, but this time home goalkeeper Johan Wiland denied the visitors.
Wiland was beaten three minutes later, though, as Messi put Barca ahead with his 30th Champions League goal and 15th of the season in all competitions.
The FC Copenhagen defence managed to crowd out Villa inside the area, but the loose ball fell to Messi who took one touch before firing in a right-footed shot that was too hot for Wiland to handle, the ball hitting the home custodian before flying in off the post.
Barca enjoyed their lead for just 60 seconds, however, before the Danish league leaders drew level.
Jesper Gronkjaer's cross was parried out by Valdes and fell perfectly for Claudemir, whose first-time volley took a slight deflection off Eric Abidal en route to finding the back of the net.
Stale Solbakken's home side were giving as good as they got in an entertaining encounter and a well-struck shot from Oscar Wendt brought a good save out of Valdes in the 34th minute.
It was Barca who would finish the first half the stronger, though, with Messi twice testing Wiland, who also saved from Villa.
Wiland was back in the action in the second half to block Iniesta`s close-range shot before Seydou Keita flashed a shot just wide from the edge of the box.
The 2009 European champions were looking the more likely scorers but they suffered a brief scare in the 74th minute when Dame N'doye - who had suffered a sickening collision with Valdes early - headed in a right-wing cross. However, the referee had spotted a clear push on Abidal by the Senegalese striker and ruled the goal out.
With time running out the game looked certain to finish 1-1, but Barca almost snatched the points and a place in the last 16 when, two minutes into injury-time, another of their World Cup contingent Pedro curled in a shot from the top corner of the box that rebounded back off the inside of the far post.
"Are Chelsea right to bring back Jose Mourinho?"
