Defensive concerns for Tisdale

Exeter boss Paul Tisdale may be forced to tinker with his back-line for the curtain-raiser against Colchester.

Tisdale has doubts over pair Matt Taylor and Richard Duffy, who have trained following injury setbacks and are battling to be fit.

The Grecians will definitely be missing long-term absentee Troy Archibald-Henville after the 21-year-old suffered a setback in his recovery from knee cartilage damage.

Striker Richard Logan is in contention to lead the City line after he shrugged off a knock, with a host of strikers chasing places in Tisdale's starting XI.

Jamie Cureton, Daniel Nardiello, Adam Stansfield, Marcus Stewart and John O'Flynn are all in contention to feature up front while Joe Heath will be hoping for a place in defence.

Colchester goalkeeper Ben Williams is set to miss the opening-day clash.

Williams is carrying an ankle knock which could keep him out for a fortnight so Mark Cousins will start while boss John Ward has signed former Leicester keeper Carl Pentney on non-contract terms as cover.

Full-back Marc Tierney limped out of the recent friendly against Aldershot with a calf problem and needs a late check.

Reading loanee Dave Mooney and summer recruits Andrew Bond, Brian Wilson and Lloyd James will push to make their debuts but a fifth new signing, midfielder Ben Coker, will be out for a month after suffering an ankle injury during pre-season.

Midfielder John-Joe O'Toole remains a long-term casualty with the cruciate injury he suffered in April while defender Morten Knudsen is also out with a knee problem and neither are expected back before the turn of the year.

Match Report

Thriller ends all square at St James' Park Exeter and Colchester shared the spoils in a four-goal thriller at St James' Park which ended 2-2. The match got off to a blistering start with three goals in the first 11 minutes and it was Exeter that opened the scoring when debutant Daniel Nardiello won a penalty after six minutes and Ryan Harley converted. However, Exeter's lead lasted four minutes before they were undone by two goals in a minute. Anthony Wordsworth rose unmarked to plant a free header past Paul Jones for the first and then smacked a stunning free-kick into the bottom corner from 30 yards to give the Essex side a half-time lead. Exeter goalkeeper Paul Jones made a great save to deny Andrew Bond, while Nardiello went close for the Grecians. However, Exeter grabbed a deserved share of the spoils with the equaliser three minutes from time. Richard Logan, who had come on as a second-half substitute got the goal when he latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty box and smashed an instinctive shot from eight yards that gave Mark Cousins no chance.
