Match Preview
Sercombe so-so for Grecians Midfielder Liam Sercombe is a doubt for Exeter as they prepare to entertain high-flying Charlton in npower League One. Sercombe was withdrawn after 16 minutes of the Grecians' goalless draw against Hartlepool on January 14 with a hamstring injury and the midfielder is touch-and-go to make the clash with the Addicks. Otherwise, manager Paul Tisdale has a fully-fit and suspension-free squad at his disposal and is spoilt for choice in the striking department. Daniel Nardiello, John O'Flynn and Richard Logan are all vying for starting berths up top, as the Grecians go into the match hoping to extend their unbeaten streak to five matches. Goalkeeper Artur Krysiak is also looking to preserve an impressive run of three consecutive clean sheets for the hosts. Leaders Charlton will be without Darel Russell. The on-loan Preston midfielder came on as a late substitute during last weekend's 1-0 win over Sheffield United and promptly got himself sent off to earn a three-match ban. Russell's absence could see a return to the squad for Dale Stephens, who has recently recovered from an ankle injury but was not risked on Saturday. Boss Chris Powell has no new injury worries and may stick with the same starting XI which sent them seven points clear at the top of League One. Striker Danny Haynes, the recent signing from Barnsley, made his debut from the bench against the Blades and is set to be among the substitutes again.
Match Report
Krysiak gifts Charlton winner Exeter goalkeeper Artur Krysiak's second-half howler gifted Charlton a narrow 1-0 win. The Polish keeper flapped Danny Green's cross into his own net for the only goal of the game as Charlton overcame stubborn resistance from an Exeter side that defended well, but created little in attack. The first half was devoid of any decent chances, but it was Exeter that looked the more threatening. John O'Flynn, James Dunne and Jake Taylor should all have done better with half chances, but failed to test Charlton goalkeeper Ben Hamer. Charlton's best opportunity came early on when former Exeter captain Matt Taylor hooked a volley goalwards, but it was hacked off the goalline by Richard Duffy. The deadlock was eventually broken 10 minutes into the second half in fortuitous circumstances. There seemed little danger when Green crossed from wide on the right, but Krysiak, under no pressure, misjudged the flight of the ball and palmed it into his own goal. Exeter huffed and puffed as the game wore on, but Guillem Bauza's shot, which was saved by Hamer, was as close as they got as the Addicks' defence held firm.
