Match Preview

Everton host Wolves on Saturday in a meeting of two sides who've found consistency an issue during the first two months of the season.

The Toffees were expected to be challenging for a top four place this year but currently find themselves down in tenth after taking just ten points from a possible 21.

Wolves are two points and seven places worse off despite producing some solid displays on their return to the Premier League.

Everton boss David Moyes has thrown down the gauntlet to his players ahead of Saturday's game after admitting they have flattered to deceive so far.

"I don't think we've reached the heights. I think we've got a good bit to go yet," he declared. "I can see the players getting more confident, a lot more belief coming into them.

"But we are trying to integrate one or two news players as well, who we're having to find out about. Overall we've done okay."

A lengthy injury list is not helping the Toffees and once again Mikel Arteta, Phil Jagielka, Phil Neville, Victor Anichebe, Steven Pienaar and James Vaughan will all miss out with knee problems.

Russia international Diniyar Bilyaletdinov is expected to shake off a thigh injury which forced him out of the 1-1 draw with Stoke City before the international break.

Marouane Fellaini has also been cleared to play despite the Belgian FA threatening a FIFA ban after he missed their midweek international game in order to have surgery on a dental problem.

Wolves arrive in Merseyside looking to arrest a run of three successive Premier League defeats at the hands of Portsmouth, Sunderland and Manchester United.

The 1-0 defeat to rock-bottom Portsmouth before the international break was a bitter pill to swallow for Mick McCarthy as he felt his side should have been awarded a "stonewall penalty" when the game was deadlocked.

However, the Molineux boss has been boosted by the returns of several key players from injury with Michael Kightly, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Stefan Maierhofer all in first-team contention, while Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo not far behind after his pre-season knee problem.

Match Report

A last-minute sending-off for Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Stefan Maierhofer marred a thrilling encounter at Goodison Park.

Maierhofer saw red after getting his second booking of the game for clattering into Tim Howard with only seconds remaining.

Kevin Doyle had put the visitors in front with 14 minutes left and it took until the last two minutes for Everton to break the resilient Wolves defence through Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.

The Toffees had the better of the early exchanges and came close in the 17th minute when Sylvain Distin's long ball forward was miscontrolled by Louis Saha and Tim Cahill picked up the pieces and smashed over from 12 yards out.

Saha had a chance from a Bilyaletdinov corner but the striker's powerful header was inches over.

Wolves defender Jody Craddock had to leave for stitches to a head injury after 20 minutes but soon returned sporting a bandage.

There was similar patching-up done by Wolves who worked their way back into the game and went close through Republic of Ireland international striker Doyle.

The best chance of the first half fell to Wolves striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake who latched onto a low Ronald Zubar cross only to drag his shot on the turn just wide of Howard's goal.

It took only 25 seconds of the second half for the first chance to arrive when a Leighton Baines cross was met by Saha whose header was tipped over the bar by Wayne Hennessey.

Hennessey saved the day again on the hour mark when Bilyaletdinov was clean through for the Toffees but the Wales goalkeeper was more than up to the task.

Everton continued to press and Saha found space on the edge of the area before hitting a curling right-footed shot which Hennessey turned wide.

But it was Wolves who took the lead on 76 minutes when Doyle found himself one-on-one with Howard and slotted coolly home.

Everton threw everything at Wolves and were rewarded in the dying minutes when Bilyaletdinov smashed home at the far post from a Jo cross.

And the game looked to be heading for an uneventful finish until Maierhofer's sending-off for a reckless tackle on Howard.
