Match Preview

Wigan Athletic are searching for only their second home Premier League victory of the season when Everton arrive at the JJB Stadium on Monday evening.

The Latics have won just three of their 13 games so far this term and their inability to find the net on a consistent basis has resulted in a failure to turn solid performances into points.

Steve Bruce's side have scored only three times in six games on home soil this season and head into this game on the back of three successive blanks at the JJB Stadium.

Therefore, Bruce will be hoping to welcome Emile Heskey back from a calf muscle strain which ruled the striker out of last weekend's 2-2 draw with Newcastle United and England's friendly victory against Germany.

Eight-goal top-scorer Amr Zaki is expected to shake off a virus which has dogged him during the week.

Emmerson Boyce is suspended following the defender's controversial red card at St James' Park which Bruce claimed cost his side the chance of three points as they were leading 1-0 at the time.

Everton make the short journey to Wigan buoyed by their recent return to form.

The Toffees were held to a 1-1 draw by Middlesbrough at Goodison Park last weekend, but have risen up to seventh place in the table on the back of three previous successive victories.

Three goals in as many games from Louis Saha have been the catalyst for the resurgence, while Yakubu's strike against his former club last weekend ended his nine-match barren spell.

Moyes has also been aided by a host of options on a substitute's bench which suddenly looks much stronger than earlier in the season when he was hampered by a lengthy injury list.

Leighton Baines, Steven Pienaar, Victor Anichebe, James Vaughan and Tony Hibbert were all among the replacements last weekend and could be given their chance to impress in the coming weeks.

Match Report

Crowd-pleaser Henri Camara came off the bench to hit his first Premier League goal for two seasons and lift Wigan clear of the drop-zone with a well-deserved win over the Toffees.

Camara, who drew a blank last year while on loan at West Ham, had only been on the pitch for six minutes when he struck the decisive blow and condemned Everton to only their second away defeat of the season.

It had been an action-packed opening half but there were no goals thanks to the two keepers who were both on top form.

Chris Kirkland was the Wigan hero early on snuffing out Everton's first real threat of the night. The Latics were caught on the break and Yakubu picked out Louis Saha with a terrific ball in from the left but Kirkland read it well and kept out the former Manchester United's 12-yard strike.

Tim Howard was in action saving from Maynor Figueroa after Wilson Palacios snapped up a deflected pass to set up the shooting chance.

Ryan Taylor gifted Everton a corner but Tim Cahill headed over when Mikel Arteta floated it in. Taylor made amends with a trademark free-kick missing the target by inches from 25 yards.

Michael Brown showed why he's found goals hard to come by when he blazed over wasting a clear-cut chance to shoot Wigan in front.

Cahill was out of luck again steering another header over from Leon Osman's deep cross but Wigan suffered too when Palacios nodded one wide.

Howard kept the scoreline blank saving a header from Titus Bramble at the foot of his right post and in stoppage time, the American did it again with a terrific double save.

He tipped aside the shot from Lee Cattermole and then from the corner he came to the rescue again punching out a Paul Scharner header.

Steve Bruce sent on Camara for Olivier Kapo and it proved an inspired change as the Senegal striker hit the goal after great build-up play from Brown and Antonio Valencia.

The Ecuador international went close to getting a second for Wigan but Howard did well to beat out the shot before Scharner protected the lead with a crucial block from Arteta.

And, in stoppage time, Cahill hammered over to blow the chance of an equaliser.
