Match Report

Two clubs with aspirations of breaking into the Premier League's top four this season meet at White Hart Lane on Tuesday.

However, the two teams had contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the campaign with Spurs slipping to a heart-breaking last-gasp 1-0 defeat at Sunderland to Martin Jol's fury.

The Dutchman fumed after the Stadium of Light loss: "We looked comfortable, but we didn't look creative.

"A draw would have been disappointing for me. It was a boring game, but we couldn't even protect the draw."

For all the pre-season optimism following the signings of Darren Bent, Gareth Bale and Younes Kaboul, Spurs showed many of the failings on Wearside that blighted their progress last season, when poor away form in the opening weeks ultimately cost them a Champions League berth.

Jol is likely to be without Michael Dawson once again after the former Nottingham Forest defender turned an ankle in training last Friday.

Aaron Lennon is making slow progress from a cartilage tear while a similar injury is expected to keep Ledley King sidelined until October.

On Saturday, David Moyes' side returned to what they have become renowned for in recent seasons - grabbing narrow victories in hard-fought games at Goodison Park.

Despite Antoine Sibierski's late goal for Wigan, Everton fully deserved their 2-1 win as they got their season off to the perfect start.

Leighton Baines could come into contention for a starting spot on Tuesday after missing the win against his former team-mates with a hamstring strain but James Vaughan (dislocated shoulder) and Tim Cahill (foot) are on the long-term injury list.

Last season in February, Spurs won 2-1 at Goodison in a game that saw Everton fans boo Moyes for his cautious approach. Dimitar Berbatov gave Spurs the lead only for Mikel Arteta to equalise before half-time.

However, after Everton had seemed happy to settle for a point, Jermaine Jenas grabbed a last-gasp winner for Jol's side.
