Match Report

Newcastle's injury crisis continues, with up to eight first-team players out of this weekend's match with in-form Everton.

The only positive news on Tyneside concerns the fitness of former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton. He has recovered after breaking a bone in his foot and will be eased back into action, starting with a run of games for the reserves.

"It will be four or five weeks or at least three or four reserve games (before a return to the first team)," manager Sam Allardyce said this week.

Full-backs Stephen Carr and Celestine Babayaro are both close to a return, but star striker Michael Owen will need at least another week on the sidelines.

The surgeon who operated on Owen's stomach recently, a second problem for the 27-year-old after his groin muscle tear, spoke optimistically about the England man's chances of a swift return to action.

"I think the game this weekend would be too soon but after that I hope he can play. The risk for re-injury is 0.2 per cent, so next to zero," Dr Ulrike Muschaweck said earlier this week.

Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins, who have scored three goals between them in the last two Premiership games, should continue in attack until Owen returns.

Everton climbed to fifth place in the league with a 2-0 win over Middlesbrough last Sunday, their first win in three Premiership games.

Lee Carsley could return to central midfield, where Thomas Gravesen and Tim Cahill are missing through injury, despite Phil Neville and Phil Jagielka performing well there last weekend.

Two players who will be back in contention are Andrew Johnson and Leon Osman, who both suffered groin strains last week, but neither were thought to be serious.

Despite having options in attack, where Yakubu, Victor Anichebe and James McFadden are competing with Johnson, Everton's top goalscorer is centre-back Joleon Lescott.

The former Wolves man bagged his fourth against Boro, all of which have been headed goals from set-pieces.

That record, added to his ability in defence, has earned him an England call-up and has helped the Toffees become one of the most dangerous Premiership sides this season.
