Match Preview

Mark Hughes has set his sights on signing five new players when the transfer window opens next month, but the main problem for the Manchester City manager is that he could see his side dragged into the relegation zone should they fail to defeat Everton at Eastlands.

City, for all the millions they have in the bank courtesy of their Abu Dhabi-based owners, are just three points better off that 18th-placed Sunderland following a run of just one win from their last seven Premier League games.

Whether the club's owners, who have designs on Champions League football, would tolerate their side slipping into the bottom three without taking action is unclear, but Hughes is certainly under pressure to improve results and quickly.

The City boss can at least welcome Robinho back after the Brazil star missed last weekend's 1-1 draw against Fulham with an ankle problem picked up in the derby defeat the previous weekend.

Darius Vassell and Benjani looked guileless in attack despite the latter scoring, while the continued struggles of £19million summer signing Jo - who is now without a goal in his last nine matches - must be a concern for the City coaching staff.

Elsewhere, Hughes is again unable to call upon Elano (groin), Gelson Fernandes (hamstring), Martin Petrov (knee), Michael Johnson (groin) and Valeri Bojinov (Achilles).

Everton arrive at the City of Manchester Stadium looking to kick-start their challenge for a UEFA Cup place.

Last weekend they equalised in the last minute but conceded a stoppage-time winner to Aston Villa in a heart-breaking 3-2
defeat at Goodison Park to lose further ground in the race for a top-six finish.

To their credit, the Toffees did score twice despite being denied the services of three injured strikers in Yakubu (Achilles), Louis Saha (hamstring), and James Vaughan (knee).

Of the trio, only Saha is likely to play again this season and manager David Moyes could be tempted to rush the France striker back this weekend as he looks to ease the burden on Victor Anichebe.

One win from their last four games has left the Merseyside club eighth in the table and closer in points terms to the bottom three than the top three.

Match Report

Tim Cahill rose above everyone else to spoil Manchester City's day again in injury time as Everton continued their impressive away form.

City captain Richard Dunne conceded a needless corner from his back header deep into added time allowing Leon Osman to step up and put a cross in which evaded everyone and fell to the lurking Cahill at the back post.

The Australian rose above Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta to nod the ball in beyond Joe Hart's grasp to break City hearts.

In what had been a closely contended game, with end-to-end action, the result might just have been deserved for David Moyes' men, who shaded Mark Hughes' side on the day with their impressive organisation and dedication to the task.

City had Micah Richards, Robinho and Elano back in the team at the expense of Tal Ben Haim, Darius Vassell, and Dietmar Hamann.

Everton made light of the absence of all their recognised strikers upfront by attacking City with purpose and organising well at the back. Cahill was their nominal frontman but it was Osman and Marouane Fellaini who had the best chances for the hard-working visitors before the matchwinning corner fell to the patient Cahill.

Osman had already tested Hart in the opening couple of minutes before Richards brought down Cahill on the edge of the D. Mikel Arteta's ninth minute free-kick rebounded off the crossbar and fell nicely for Fellaini but his lofted header landed on top of Hart's goal.

Everton were working hard and carving out real chances, but their lack of strikers betrayed them as Moyes watched first-half chances wasted by Steven Pienaar and Arteta, while a great chance of an added-time tap-in from six yards by Fellaini off Osman's cross was thwarted by some great goalkeeping by Hart.

By contrast, City did have their chances but their threat was mainly kept to a minimum by the regimented Toffees. It was 13 minutes before their first convincing chance on goal.

Shaun Wright-Phillips came closest to scoring, rattling Tim Howard's crossbar from Robinho's lay-off after 41 minutes, but Howard was never really tested by efforts from Benjani, Stephen Ireland or Robinho later in the game.

If City are to realise their ambitions of European football, Hughes will have to get the chequebook out or they will simply not deserve to dine at the top table of European football next season.
