Match Preview

Everton face a tough looking clash against Aston Villa at the weekend with their ever worsening injury list failing to cease.

To top this off, the Toffees will play their fourth game in a gruelling ten-day period. They also travelled to Portugal to face Benfica in the UEFA Europa Cup, where they were hammered 5-0.

David Moyes' men will be itching to get a win on the board with his team edging closer to the relegation and they sit in 14th place.

Senior players such as Tim Howard, Sylvain Distin and Tim Cahill must roll their sleeves up and fight for the cause whilst the Blues' squad is blighted by a massive list of injuries.

Leon Osman (ankle), Joseph Yobo (concussion) and Steven Pienaar (knee) could come back into contention as they near fitness but Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (thigh), Leighton Baines (calf), James Vaughan (knee), Phil Neville (knee), Victor Anichebe (knee), Phil Jagielka (knee) and Mikel Arteta (knee) are all out, giving Moyes a huge headache.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill will be hoping to use Everton's problems to his advantage.

His side sit seventh in the table and a win will consolidate their European push.

He will have been disappointed to see his team throw away a lead at local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers last week although he will be pleased that Gabriel Agbonlahor maintain his hot goalscoring streak as he hit his sixth goal in eight games.

Curtis Davies (dislocated shoulder) and Stewart Downing (ankle) remain the only players on the sidelines for the Midlands club.

England wing wizard Ashley Young will be hoping to rampage down the Goodison Park flanks this weekend in the same way he did last term.

Villa scored a stunning 3-2 win last season with Steve Sidwell stunning the visitors inside 35 seconds to put them ahead.

Joleon Lescott equalised before Young restored Villa's lead.

Match Report

John Carew struck 43 seconds after coming on as a half-time sub to grab Aston Villa a share of the spoils against Everton at Goodison Park.

The 30-year-old Norway striker replaced James Milner at the break with Villa trailing to Diniyar Bilyaletdinov's second goal in three games in first-half stoppage time.

And with his first touch Carew slotted the ball home after Tim Howard spilled Gabriel Agbonlahor's shot.

Bilyaletdinov and Carlos Cuellar both saw red in the final five minutes to leave Martin O'Neill's side unbeaten in five games, while Everton haven't tasted victory in six outings.

Villa boss O'Neill had never lost at Goodison and Steve Sidwell, on his 250th career appearance, had the first chance of the game when he headed wide in the sixth minute.

Sidwell struck after 34 seconds the last time the two sides met in the league at Everton, but after failing to build on their early advantage it was the Toffees who should have gone ahead just before the half-hour.

Summer signing John Heitinga swung the ball in from the flank and Yakubu rose highest but could only direct his header wide of Brad Friedel's post.

Villa responded with Emile Heskey and full-back Stephen Warnock firing wide of the Everton goal within five minutes of each other.

But it was the hosts who finally took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Yakubu miscontrolled Tim Cahill's cross and Bilyaletdinov swept the ball home.

Carew had scored three goals in his last three games against Everton and with his side trailing at the break, O'Neill threw on the big Norwegian with immediate effect.

Agbonlahor cut in from the wing and unleashed a stinging shot that Tim Howard could only palm into the path of Carew who netted 43 seconds after replacing Milner.

Substitute Louis Saha fired wide for Everton in the 85th minute, but their challenge ended moments later when Bilyaletdinov saw red for a professional foul.

And referee Lee Probert evened up the teams in the 89th minute when Cuellar collected his second yellow.
