FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 4-0 GREECE

Kyrgiakos surges forward for Greece, but the hard-working Crouch gets in an important tackle just outside the England area.

It's going to be a comfortable victory for England, but they've been made to work hard in the second half. Greece have been unlucky not to net a consolation, but Kirkland has performed well in the home goal.

Lennon goes past Lagos, who pulls him back to concede a free-kick on the right side of the Greek penalty area. Richardson goes for goal, but his effort is well wide.

Terry carelessly gives the ball away on the edge of the area. Giorgos Karagounis collects and unleashes an angled drive which Kirkland does well to parry to safety.

Wayne Bridge replaces Cole at left-back.

Lennon cuts in from the right and attempts to play in Crouch. The pass doesn't quite reach the striker, but Lampard picks up the loose ball in the area and attempts to shoot. Lagos makes a good block.

Jamie Carragher and Darren Bent replace Neville and Gerrard.

England finally enjoy a spell of possession, but a poor pass from Lennon sees the move break down.

Neville heads behind under pressure from Charisteas, but the corner comes to nothing.

Charisteas tries his luck from 20 yards, but his scuffed shot is easily gathered by Kirkland.

Richardson makes an important first contribution, cutting out a throughball at the expense of a corner. Kyrgiakos rises highest to meet the flag-kick, but Amanatidis can't quite reach his knock down.

England bring on Kieran Richardson and Aaron Lennon, with Downing and Defoe the men to go off.

Vyntra goes down injured, just after Greece have made their sixth and final substitution.

The second half has been all Greece, with the arrival of Amanatidis from the bench making a real difference.

Crouch makes a mess of attempting to clear from another Greek corner and Cole is forced to put the ball behind under pressure from Amanatidis.

Greece finally have a worthwhile attempt at goal, but Kirkland saves Amanatidis' shot at the expense of a corner. The flag-kick causes panic in the England defence and Ashley Cole twice has to clear off the line from Dellas and Amanatidis.

Terry gets up well to meet the corner, but Hargreaves concedes a free-kick as he attempts to complete the clearance.

The European champions have started the second half well and win a corner.

Greece finally enjoy a spell of pressure, but Terry reacts quickly to clear the danger.

McClaren gets a warm welcome from the crowd as he walks down the touchline to the bench. It's been a dream start for him.

Chris Kirkland finally makes his England debut, replacing Robinson in goal. Greece have made four changes at the break. Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Angelos Basinas, Dimitrios Salpigidis and Ioannis Amanatidis are the men to come on.

Greece get the second half underway.

Downing's crossing and Defoe's pace and work-rate have made a real difference, while Gerrard has performed as he does for Liverpool.

England are unrecognisable from the team that struggled in Germany. They're well organised in midfield, have passed the ball incisively and played with real pace going forward.

HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 4-0 GREECE

ENGLAND 4-0 GREECE Neville's cross from the right just eludes Crouch in the middle, but the ball finds Downing on the left side of the box. His chipped cross picks out CROUCH, who finds the target with a simple header.

It's hard to criticise England so far, but it's worth pointing out that the Greek defence is abysmal.

Ferdinand heads a Greek free-kick clear and England break quickly. Defoe tries to pick out Downing but Nikopolidis comes out of his area to head the ball clear.

ENGLAND 3-0 GREECE Downing latches on to a poor clearance and crosses to Lampard six yards out. The Chelsea man's shot is well saved by Nikopolidis, but CROUCH taps in the rebound.

Konstantinos Katsouranis tries his luck from 35 yards. His effort flies over the crossbar and high in to the crowd.

ENGLAND 2-0 GREECE Defoe makes a useful run down the left wing and plays in LAMPARD, who scores with the help of a deflection off Antzas.

Panagiotis Lagos replaces the injured Takis Fyssas.

Angelos Charisteas gets up well to win a header on the edge of England box, but his flick on rolls through to Paul Robinson. Greece seem reluctant to get men forward.

A dreadful attempted clearance by Rio Ferdinand almost puts England in trouble, but Hargreaves gets back to clear the danger.

A half-cleared corner finds Hargreaves on the edge of the area, but he is closed down quickly and his shot is blocked.

England have started really well, dominating possession and creating some good chances.

Gerrard picks out Crouch at the back post with a perfectly judged cross, but the big striker heads wide. It should have been 2-0.

ENGLAND 1-0 GREECE Visiting keeper Antonios Nikopolidis makes a poor attempt at a punch, Downing heads the ball back in and TERRY heads home from close range. A great start for the new captain.

Crouch does well to win a high ball ten yards from the Greek box. Paraskevas Antzas uses a hand to clear the danger, but the referee fails to spot the offence.

Crouch goes down easily under a challenge from Traianos Dellas five yards from the Greek penalty area. The referee isn't fooled and waves play on.

Gerrard comes in to the middle, collects a pass from Downing and tries his luck from distance. His tame effort dribbles wide.

England win the first corner of the game, but Downing's delivery is poor and is easily cleared.

Gary Neville tries to play in Gerrard on the right side of the area, but the Liverpool star is slow to react and Greece clear.

The two sides are taking it in turns to pass it about in midfield, with no sign of attacking intent yet.

England kick-off and the McClaren era is underway.

New captain John Terry leads the team out at a half-empty Old Trafford. England's tedious displays at the World Cup seem to have persuaded the fans to hang on to their cash.

Greece coach Otto Rehhagel has named an experienced line-up, including seven of the team that started the Euro 2004 final success against Portugal. Bolton winger Stelios Giannakopoulos and Man City striker Georgios Samaras both start.

Steven Gerrard moves sideways to step in to Beckham's boots on the right side of midfield, while the England fans' new favourite Owen Hargreaves wears the former skipper's number seven shirt.

In come left winger Stewart Downing and front pair Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe. West Ham striker Dean Ashton would have started ahead of Crouch, but broke his ankle in training the day before his scheduled international debut.

The new head coach's first selection is far from revolutionary, with eight of the team that started the World Cup quarter-final loss to Portugal retaining their places. Ex-captain David Beckham is dropped, while Joe Cole and Wayne Rooney are injured.
