England face FYR Macedonia in a Euro 2008 qualifier at Old Trafford this afternoon

Match Report

Steve McClaren's winning run came to an end as England laboured to a goalless Euro 2008 qualifying draw with FYR Macedonia at Old Trafford.

Since replacing Sven-Goran Eriksson at the helm of the national side, McClaren had guided England to three victories in as many games.

But after failing to break down a resolute Macedonia rearguard at Old Trafford, the new England head coach was left to rue a lack of invention in the final third.

Ironically the return of Wayne Rooney following a three-game suspension after his World Cup misdemeanours against Portugal was expected to pep up the England attack.

But once again the 20-year-old looked out of sorts and but for a half-chance in the second half, looked worryingly ineffective and was replaced before the end by Jermain Defoe.

McClaren also welcomed Gary Neville back to the fold after the full-back missed the 1-0 victory in Skopje last month, but he was denied the services of another Manchester United star as Rio Ferdinand suffered an 11th hour back injury.

It was Macedonia however who settled first and showed in the opening exchanges that they would offer more resistance than Andorra, who England put five past on their last home outing.

The visitors were comfortable on the ball and well-organised at the back and in the shape of Goran Pandev and Ilco Naumoski were always likely to cause problems on the break.

Indeed Pandev was first to threaten as he found the side-netting in the 11th minute after playing a one-two with his striker partner and forging an opening six yards from goal.

Robert Petrov then crashed a ten-yard volley from a Vlade Lazarevski cross over the bar just after the half-hour mark, when the Macedonia midfielder had ghosted past marker Steven Gerrard on the edge of the box.

That chance towards the end of the first period seemed to spur the home side into action and Jane Nikoloski was called on for the first time with three minutes left in the first half.

The Macedonia goalkeeper blocked a stabbed shot from Frank Lampard after he had taken the ball down on the edge of the penalty area and cut inside his marker.

Nikoloski was called into action again early in the second half as he palmed away a flicked header by Lampard after Gerrard's angled free-kick caused panic in the Macedonia box.

But with England often guilty of lacking ideas in the opposition half, Macedonia came close to forcing a surprise opening when Aleksandar Mitreski rose on the penalty spot to head a corner just over the bar after John Terry had misjudged the flight of the ball.

Again the scare seemed to rouse the home team and Neville wasted an excellent chance when he could only lash a difficult shot from an acute angle over the top after the keeper had blocked Peter Crouch's stooping header.

Rooney was next to test the keeper as, despite mis-controlling a long ball over the top, he managed to dispatch a left-foot drive which was blocked at point-blank range by Nikoloski.

McClaren sent on Shaun Wright-Phillips and Defoe in a bid to make the breakthrough with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Wright-Phillips threatened with some direct running and it was from another of his probes in the 85th minute that England came closest to breaking the deadlock.

Wright-Phillips skipped past his marker and squared to Gerrard 25 yards from goal and the Liverpool skipper crashed a shot against the crossbar with the keeper well beaten.

England continued to press for a goal, but their below-par performance was typified by a Crouch miss in stoppage time, when he rose above the defence but could only direct a header well wide of target.
