Match Preview
Severin back for United Dundee United defender Scott Severin could return for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Inverness following a five-month lay-off with an ankle injury. Severin`s return comes at a welcome time for United with Garry Kenneth not yet fully fit following a knee injury and Darren Dods (knee) still out. Craig Conway (thigh) is out for another fortnight, while midfielder Prince Buaben is suspended. Peter Houston insists United only need to cast their minds back to their early-season setback at the hands on Inverness to know the Highlanders pose a serious threat at Tannadice. SPL new boys Caley Thistle ran amok 4-0 at Tannadice in an encounter which sent a warning to the rest of the top flight. And Houston, whose Tangerines side could clinch a top-six place with a victory, knows the outcome of their last league clash on Tayside serves as a timely reminder ahead of their Clydesdale Bank meeting. Houston said: "Inverness are a free-flowing side on their day as we found to our cost earlier in the season. "They hit top form that day while we were well below par so we don't need any reminding of what they're capable of. "They have players like Johnny Hayes and Adam Rooney who can really turn it on when they want to. "Rooney is an excellent striker and we'll need to keep a close eye on him along with some other players they have in their team. "They'll be disappointed from the way thing went the other night against Celtic in the Scottish Cup. "But with two guys like Terry Butcher and Maurice Malpas at the helm they'll definitely be looking to bounce back at the earliest opportunity." United can make sure of their top-half status and their manager reckons his players would deserve all the credit should they secure it. Houston, whose side have chalked up four straight SPL wins, said: "It would be a good achievement for us considering how many games we've had recently. "It's been well-documented they've been coming thick and fast but all credit to the players for their approach and application over the past few weeks. "They're a fit bunch of lads anyway who look after themselves well away from the field. "I'm going to give them a few days off next week ahead of the Scottish Cup replay at Motherwell on March 29. "It would mean a well-earned rest for all they've been through and I don't think anyone could begrudge them that. "In the meantime, I'm asking them for one big push in the Inverness game and then they can enjoy a bit of a break. "I'm basically asking for more of the same from them. "They did fantastically well to beat Hearts with two goals in the last seven minutes in midweek. "That said everything you need to know about them so hopefully they can do the same in this game and keep the run going." Inverness have an unchanged squad. Irish wingers Jonny Hayes and Aaron Doran are pushing for more involvement after returning from injury late in the Scottish cup defeat by Celtic on Wednesday.David Proctor (hamstring) and Dani Sanchez (hand) are again on the sidelines.

Match Report
Top-half finish for Terrors Dundee United guaranteed a top-six place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The only goal of the match came two minutes before the break when Danny Swanson guided the ball home with a smart left-foot finish. It was United's fifth game in 12 days but they showed no signs of tiredness against the Highlanders as they won five consecutive league games for the first time in 14 years. United made only one change, with Swanson replacing the injured Sean Dillon, while Scott Severin was listed among the United substitutes following his return after a five-month lay-off with an ankle injury. The Caley Jags, who ran out 4-0 winners at Tannadice back in August, made two changes from the side that lost 2-1 to Celtic in the Co-operative Insurance Cup in midweek. Jonny Hayes and Eric Odhiambo were both given starts in place of the absent Nick Ross and Shane Sutherland, who dropped to the bench. Johnny Russell looked in confident mood following his double in United's 2-0 win over Hearts but he was unable to guide his header from a Keith Watson cross under the crossbar with less than four minutes gone. The visitors should have opened the scoring after nine minutes when Hayes found Richie Foran unmarked at the back post but the Caley skipper's header was comfortably gathered by Dusan Pernis. United carved out a decent opening after 15 minutes when Swanson rolled the ball into the path of David Robertson but the midfielder's effort from the edge of the area drifted harmlessly wide. Slovakia stopper Pernis then saved bravely at the feet of Chris Hogg as both sides continued to press for the breakthrough. A Swanson effort from the edge of the box was deflected wide before United had a penalty claim waved away after Scott Robertson collided with Foran in the box. Ryan Esson came to Caley's rescue after 40 minutes when he pulled off a smart save to deny David Goodwillie after the United striker had glided past Hogg with ease. But the inevitable opener came two minutes before the break when Scott Robertson nodded the ball into the path of Swanson, who guided the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot. Ross Tokely picked up the first booking of the match after 50 minutes for a reckless tackle on Goodwillie before the hosts had another claim for a penalty turned down when Swanson looked to have been impeded by Hogg. The visitors made their first change after 56 minutes with Alex MacDonald coming on for Adam Rooney. United stopper Pernis was at full stretch to keep out a Lee Cox drive from the edge of the area before David Robertson missed a glorious opportunity at the other end when he somehow fired over from six yards out. Russell should have put the game beyond doubt after 76 minutes but he fired the ball well over the crossbar when he had time and space to take an extra touch. However the miss was not to prove decisive as Peter Houston's men hung on for all three points.
