Brugge chief: Point enough
Club Brugge chairman Pol Jonckheere believes a draw will be a good result from his team's Europa League trip to Dinamo Zagreb.
The Belgians sit bottom of Group D with just a single point from their opening two games and a defeat is likely to cut them adrift at the halfway stage.
Jonckheere is, however, unwilling to put pressure on his players, which have won just two of their past 11 away European ties, and who will be without star striker Ronald Vargas for the trip to the Croatian capital.
The Venezuelan has scored nine goals in his past 11 matches but is suspended after he was sent off in their 2-1 defeat at Villarreal three weeks ago.
"We will miss Vargas," Jonckheere told www.belgiumsoccer.be.
"But in the Jupiler League we are playing some good football and against Villarreal we really were not bad.
"We narrowly lost 2-1 with 10 men against one of the better teams in the world.
"We will have to compete against Dinamo - they are a good team. Croatian footballers can never be underestimated.
"It sounds pessimistic but a victory is not necessary. A draw seems to be considered as the minimum.
"It is regrettable that we will be without Vargas because he is very important to us."
The Belgians could also be without Jonathan Blondel for the match after he missed training today with a virus while Stijn Stijnen is still out injured.
Wilfried Dalmat and Jeroen Simaeys, who were suspended in the 3-2 win over Zulte-Waregem last Friday night, are due to return.
Dinamo began their Europa League campaign with a stunning 2-0 home success over group favourites Villarreal before falling to a 1-0 defeat at PAOK Salonika.
That has left them second in the group and knowing that victory against Brugge would leave them in a strong position to qualify from the group.
They will, however, be wary of the fact they were beaten by Belgian opposition in in the group stage of the competition last season, when Anderlecht snatched a 2-0 win at the Maksimir Stadium.
Bore draw in Zagreb
Dinamo Zagreb and Club Brugge cancelled each other out in a dismal Europa League encounter at Stadion Maksimir.
In a game of few clear-cut chances, Dinamo's Jorge Sammir spurned the best chance to settle it one way or another when he won a penalty inside the final 15 minutes only to fluff his lines from 12 yards.
The draw moves Dinamo onto four points from their opening three Group D games while winless Brugge are propping up the rest on two points.
Dinamo began with the most attacking intent and Sammir produced their first shot on target inside two minutes but Geert De Vlieger was equal to it, tipping the ball around the post.
Brugge hit back on nine minutes with Karel Geraerts' left-footed shot forcing Ivan Kelava into action.
Midway through the half Geraerts again threatened the hosts' goal, this time the midfielder forcing Kelava to parry his effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Geraerts twice fired wide with optimistic efforts from outside the box before the break while team-mate Rostand Kouemaha was wayward with a shot on 39 minutes as the Belgians continued to press.
The second half began much as the first ended, with Brugge enjoying the better of the attacking play.
Ivan Perisic was the next to go close for the visitors when he fired a long-range effort at Kelava on 63 minutes, but Dinamo came back into it over the next five minutes with Ante Rukavina and Leandro Cufre both going close.
The major talking point arrived 15 minutes from time when De Vlieger hauled down Sammir in the area and the referee pointed to the spot.
De Vlieger picked up a booking for his troubles but was not forced into meaningful action from the spot-kick as Sammir sent his effort wide of the right-hand post.
With time running out Dinamo threw on Fatos Beciraj in a bid to force a goal and the substitute went close with a header on 81 minutes that De Vlieger kept at bay.
Tonel and Milan Badelj both fired wildly over the bar as Dinamo ran out of ideas late on, and Brugge were able to close out the match for a deserved point.
"Will David Moyes be able to turn it around at Ma..."
