Match Report

The new season may be just days old but Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol is already beginning to feel the heat after a below-par start by his side.

Spurs followed up a surprise 1-0 defeat at Sunderland on the opening day of the campaign with a 3-1 loss to Everton at White Hart Lane in midweek.

Jol's side looked short of confidence in Wednesday's defeat and found themselves second best to more determined opposition in a disappointing first 90 minutes of Premier League action in north London.

Meanwhile, Spurs' poor start to the new season has been compounded by a double injury blow to Dimitar Berbatov and Younes Kaboul.

Key striker Berbatov and central defender Kaboul have joined a lengthy injury list which already contains the likes of Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Aaron Lennon, Gareth Bale and Lee Young-Pyo.

"We've had a couple more blows," admitted manager Martin Jol after Wednesday's defeat.

"Younes Kaboul will be out for the next three or four weeks with the hamstring injury he suffered against Everton, that's a real kick in the teeth and Dimitar Berbatov has a groin problem. He will be out for a couple of weeks."

Just seven days ago, Spurs were being mentioned as genuine challengers to the big four's dominance of the Champions League qualifying spots, but after back-to-back defeats the pressure is already mounting on the Dutch coach.

Jol spent more than £40million during the summer on a host of new recruits and handed a debut to £16.5million England striker Darren Bent against Everton.

However, with Robbie Keane forced into an unfamiliar right-sided role in the absence of the ill Teemo Taino plus the continued absence of Ledley King (knee) and Michael Dawson (ankle), Spurs looked lightweight in midfield and defence.

Meanwhile, confidence is high at newly-promoted Derby County after they began the campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Portsmouth last weekend.

Matt Oakley and summer signing Andy Todd were on the scoresheet for Billy Davies' side, who followed up their opening day stalemate with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on Wednesday evening - the 100th Premier League defeat in their history.

Off the field there has been plenty of positive news with the confirmation that Davies has finally ended speculation surrounding his future at the helm of the club by signing a new contract.

The combustible Scot and his assistant David Kelly have both put pen to paper on new contracts which tie them to Pride Park until summer 2010.

Meanwhile, new signing Benny Feilhaber could be named on the bench after the American international midfielder was granted international clearance following his transfer from SV Hamburg in Germany.

However, teenage midfielder Giles Barnes - himself the subject of reported interest from West Ham United this week - will once again be absent as he remains sidelined with a foot injury sustained in last season's play-off final.
