Match Report

Derby County host Wigan Athletic in a clash which both sides will be desperate to win, as they battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The Rams' plight is already looking bleak as they prop up the table with just seven points gained this season, but boss Paul Jewell will be hoping to mastermind a miraculous escape, starting against his former employers.

Last weekend Derby fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round and Jewell tried to look on the bright side after that encounter.

He said: "A month ago we would have lost that game heavily, but we showed good character to come back. We made the usual basic errors, but I am taking the positives out of the game.

"The situation we're in at the moment, we have to take any crumb of comfort we can."

Since that result, Jewell has added striker Emanuel Villa, winger Laurent Robert and midfield battler Robbie Savage to his squad and all three could make their debuts on Saturday.

Last weekend saw Danny Mills make his debut following his loan arrival from Manchester City, while Andy Todd made a surprise return to action after injury, but goalkeeper Stephen Bywater and left-back Jay McEveley will miss out against the Latics.

While Derby were fighting to avoid a cup upset, Wigan were recording a superb 3-0 victory at Sunderland to continue their improvement since the arrival of Steve Bruce.

The Latics have lost just twice in Bruce's eight games in charge and have pulled themselves out of the relegation zone, although they are still only outside the bottom three on goal difference.

Bruce has an almost fully-fit squad to choose from, with only back-up goalkeeper Carlo Nash currently out of action.

The two sides last met in the 2004-05 season, with the league fixture at the JJB Stadium ending 2-1 to the Rams thanks to goals from Grzegorz Rasiak and Tommy Smith.
