Match Report

Derby County are on course for an immediate return to the Championship, but they could still avoid the ignominy of relegation with the lowest ever points total if they secure a victory over the current record holders.

The Rams have amassed just nine points after winning a paltry one league game all season, but taking three points off fellow strugglers Sunderland would provide a much-needed confidence boost for Paul Jewell's side.

The County boss has challenged his side to surpass Sunderland's 2005-06 total of 15 points which saw them relegated with the lowest ever total in Premier League history.

"We know our season is over in terms of staying in the Premier League, but we don't want that lowest points total and beating Sunderland's 15 points is something to aim for," Jewell admitted.

"I know it sounds a little negative, but the fact is we're not good enough for this league at the moment despite how hard the lads try."

Jewell was particularly unhappy with the level of performance in last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic and has promised wholesale changes to the squad in the summer.

But for the meantime he must battle on with a squad decimated by the loss of four players - including Claude Davis and Tyrone Mears - to injury and totally devoid of confidence.

Derby's 1-0 defeat at Sunderland in early January, when Anthony Stokes scored in the 90th minute, highlighted their woes in a season to forget at English football's top table.

Sunderland will hopefully head in search of their first away win of the season without their autograph books this weekend.

Furious manager Roy Keane accused his players of being star-struck after slipping to a club record tenth straight away defeat at Portsmouth last weekend to remain deep in relegation trouble.

Just four points separate the Black Cats from the drop-zone and Keane has demanded an improved display in what surely represents their best chance for an away victory all season.

Injured quartet Kieran Richardson (hamstring), Liam Miller (calf), Danny Higginbotham (ankle) and Carlos Edwards (broken leg) are all closing in on a return, but the trip to Pride Park may come too soon.

However, three victories from their last six games have boosted confidence at the Stadium of Light and a similar run in the coming weeks would surely secure their top-flight status.
