Match Preview

Rams boss waits on injury worries Manager Nigel Clough is waiting on the fitness of several players before he decides how to shuffle Derby's defence for the visit of Scunthorpe. Shaun Barker's one-match suspension for reaching five yellow cards means the Rams need a central defensive partner for Dean Leacock. Russell Anderson, John Brayford and Dean Moxey are the men in the frame but who gets the nod could depend on the fitness of other players. Groin and hamstring injuries have restricted Anderson to a single start this season, but, despite the Scot not featuring in the reserve-team game against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, Clough hopes he will train on Friday and be available. Brayford could again switch from right-back to replace Barker. When Brayford has been asked to play at centre-half, Paul Green has dropped filled in at full-back, but the midfielder is a doubt after he was forced to pull out of the Republic of Ireland squad this week with an ankle injury. A third option would be to bring in Gareth Roberts, who played 70 minutes for the reserves in midweek, at left-back and move Moxey into the centre. Elsewhere, on-loan keeper Frank Fielding is nursing a bruised hip following the defeat at Leicester so Stephen Bywater could start after making his return from a wrist injury in the reserves. Striker Alberto Bueno (ankle and Achilles) could also come back into the reckoning. Scunthorpe boss Ian Baraclough will assess the fitness of several players ahead of the trip. Defender Eddie Nolan took a knock to his ankle in last weekend's home defeat to Cardiff and is the Iron's biggest injury concern. Rookie centre-back Niall Canavan continues to miss out with a knee problem while David Mirfin is absent until December with a foot injury. Sam Togwell is also sidelined due to a knee injury and defender Michael Raynes will be assessed along with Garry Thompson and Jim McNulty. Midfielder Michael O'Connor and goalkeeper Joe Murphy will return to training from international duty with Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland respectively on Friday. On-loan West Ham striker Freddie Sears will play the final game of his month-long stay but Scunthorpe are hoping to extend the agreement.

Match Report

Rams' home run continues after penalty drama A controversial penalty helped 10-man Derby record six successive home victories for the first time at Pride Park as they defeated Scunthorpe 3-2. Tomasz Cywka put the Rams ahead after just three minutes before Jonathan Forte equalised with his first goal since the opening month of the season in the 27th minute. The game`s main talking point came 10 minutes later. Alberto Bueno did well to force his way into the penalty area, but once the Spaniard got there he appeared to go down very easily under a challenge from Michael O'Connor. Scunthorpe complained, but to no avail, and Kris Commons smashed home the spot-kick. Luke Moore looked to have wrapped up all three points for Derby just before the hour mark but the Iron reduced their arrears to a single goal once more when Gareth Roberts brought down Freddie Sears with 15 minutes remaining. Roberts received his second yellow card and was subsequently sent off and O`Connor converted the penalty. However, the Rams held on for a sixth straight win for the first time since they left the Baseball Ground for Pride Park in 1997. Derby flew out of the blocks and Cywka quickly opened the scoring. Bueno slid the ball inside from the right and the Pole drove a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. The Rams would have doubled their lead after eight minutes had Joe Murphy not tipped a long-range shot from Commons around a post. Scunthorpe almost equalised with their first real attack but Rob Jones` header from O`Connor`s cross struck a post. Forte flashed a shot just wide midway through the first half before getting on the scoresheet shortly afterwards. The striker latched on to O`Connor`s pass and shrugged off a Derby defender before beating Frank Fielding from 12 yards. Murphy was called into action again to deny Cywka but Commons soon put Derby back in front, much to the dismay of all associated with the Iron. Cywka headed wide at the start of the second half. The Pole was involved again when the Rams extended their lead, providing the pass for Moore to fire a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area after 59 minutes. Fielding reacted quickly to keep out O`Connor`s free-kick but the on-loan keeper could do little when he faced the Northern Ireland international from the penalty spot. Scunthorpe could not really take advantage of Roberts` dismissal. Substitutes Trent McClenahan and Garry Thompson had efforts but missed the target, while Josh Wright fired over the bar from long range in a last act of desperation in injury time.
