Match Report

Derby County continue to battle the basement blues as they host a resurgent Middlesbrough side on Saturday.

To make matters worse for the Rams, this is a fixture they have failed to win for nine years, while Boro are fresh from a 2-1 win over league leaders Arsenal.

County's 4-1 loss to Manchester United last weekend, their sixth in a row, was the second match under new manager Paul Jewell - following the tight, 1-0 loss to Sunderland two weeks ago.

Yet Jewell continues to look for positives in the performances of a side which is threatening to be dead and buried by the new year.

Speaking after the defeat to United, Jewell said: "You're not going to win any matches playing like that. We showed courage and had a bit of conviction, so we have to take the positives from that.

"Hopefully we can give the fans something soon," he added, although the former Wigan boss has also admitted there may be "some transfer market action in January."

Jewell may continue with the same squad he took to Old Trafford, although the performance of striker Steve Howard - capped off with his first goal of the season - puts pressure on Kenny Miller to retain his starting place as the lone frontman.

Injuries, something the Rams have largely avoided so far, partially dictate Middlesbrough's team selection this weekend.

Goalkeepers Mark Schwarzer and Brad Jones are both doubtful with hand and thigh problems respectively.

Third-choice keeper Ross Turnbull may keep his place in the starting eleven having conceded just two goals in the last two games.

Striker Mido remains out with a groin problem and might not return until 2008, leaving Tuncay and Jeremie Aliadiere to lead the line once again.

Tuncay starred in the win over Arsenal and has scored twice in the last two games, earning glowing praise from manager Gareth Southgate.

"He's now got the evidence that he can score in this division - and against the best in this division as well," said the Boro boss.

The Turkey international could play in an unchanged team from last Sunday, with Jonathan Woodgate continuing to marshal a much-improved defensive unit.
