Match Report

Derby County host Fulham on Saturday with the home side continuing to play for pride as their season spirals towards embarrassment.

Fulham's steep climb out of the relegation zone remains a possibility though, despite crumbling to defeat at Newcastle last weekend.

The Londoners remain four points adrift of Birmingham in 17th but, having beaten Everton and drawn with Blackburn already this month, escape is a possibility.

For Derby the outlook is bleak. Comments made by manager Paul Jewell this week sum up the state of their season - playing with one eye on the Championship next term.

"I keep saying I can't wait for this season to finish because I know the players I want to bring in - players with a strong mentality," he said.

"I want good footballers who can take the pressure of expecting to win, because I want us to expect to win next season."

Former manager Billy Davies, who guided the Rams to promotion last season, has also waded into the debate by claiming their promotion "was probably two seasons too soon."

Davies went on to say: "I'm not surprised (they're struggling) because so much work had to be done. But the most important thing for Derby was that the financial structure of the club has changed because of promotion."

Derby's injury problems show no signs of subsiding, with Giles Barnes and Alan Stubbs out with knee and calf problems respectively.

Those two could at least play again this season, while Claude Davis, Tyrone Mears and Danny Mills are all out until the summer.

Fulham have no such problems but manager Roy Hodgson could shake up his side after a poor performance on Tyneside last weekend.

"We've got to keep playing and, if we could play as well for 90 minutes as we did in the first half, we might have come away from here with a result," he said after the 2-0 defeat.
