Match Preview
Dead rubber for duo Debrecen host Sampdoria in their Group I match with nothing but pride left to play for as both teams are already eliminated from the Europa League. Sampdoria's 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the last round ended their hopes of playing in Europe in the new year, while the Hungarians suffered their fifth loss in the tournament with a 2-1 setback at Metalist earlier this month. The Italians are third in the standings, five points clear of rock-bottom Debrecen. Samp go into the encounter at the Ferenc Puskas stadium on the back of Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Brescia. The result ended a four-match unbeaten run for Samp and dropped them to eighth in Serie A. "Brescia took one shot and they scored," said Samp coach Domenico Di Carlo. "Although my team played well, we didn't make the most of our chances. "We must improve on certain aspects of our game. "We have to play better in attack and not expect (striker Giampaolo) Pazzini to always deliver in front of goal." With Samp ending the year against Genoa in Sunday's city derby, Di Carlo will make wholesale changes to the side that lost at Brescia. "Sunday's game is a very important game for us," said Di Carlo. "The players are looking forward to the match. "We want to win this derby." Samp's top scorer Pazzini is among the players that have remained in Genoa to prepare for the upcoming derby at the Luigi Ferraris stadium. Pazzini's absence will be a relief for Debrecen as it was his penalty goal that proved the difference when the two sides last met back in September. Di Carlo has included 10 players from the reserve team for the trip to Budapest. Third-choice goalkeeper Vincenzo Fiorillo could make his season debut at Debrecen on Thursday with Samp's number one Gianluca Curci having been given the night off. Andras Herczeg's Debrecen are desperate to finish a dismal campaign on a high note. Debrecen are the only side along with FC Karpaty Lviv yet to pick up a point in the group stage. They have found the net just twice in the competition while conceding 13 goals so far.

Match Report
Debrecen end with win Debrecen ended their dismal Europa League campaign on a high with a 2-0 victory at home against an under-strength Sampdoria. The Hungarians, looking to avoid a sixth straight defeat in Group I, finally picked up their first points thanks to Peter Kabat's second-half double. The victory also doubled the number of goals Debrecen had scored in the group. Both sides were already eliminated from the competition, having won a combined one game in 10 matches, and the lack of anything to play for was painfully evident in the desperate first half. Debrecen posed the greater threat throughout, and only Samp goalkeeper Junior Costa kept the score down. Kabat's drilled effort from 25 yards was parried by Costa before the goalkeeper held Peter Czvitkovics' shot from closer in. Czvitkovics then volleyed over the top as half-time approached. Debrecen stepped up the pressure after the break and Kabat made the breakthrough in the 48th minute. His first effort from Ondoa Yannick's cross was blocked by defender Daniele Messina, but the former Hungary striker pounced on the rebound and slotted the ball low into the net. The hosts almost made it 2-0 in the 55th minute as Dejan Simac met Kabat's corner only to see his header parried away by Costa. Peter Szakaly headed wide as Debrecen continued to push for a second goal and then saw his shot from outside the area tipped round the post by Costa, who was preventing the night from becoming embarrassing for Samp. Szakaly then fired over the bar before Adam Bodi shot straight at Costa. The hosts got the second goal their pressure deserved in the 86th minute as Jonathan Rossini's clearance fell to Kabat in the area. The striker mis-hit his shot but the ball still found the bottom corner. The visitors finally offered something going forward in stoppage time when Massimo Volta's shot was blocked by Dejan Simac, but their performance did not merit a consolation.
