Match Report

Rushden and Darlington battled out a 1-1 draw at Nene Park on the opening day of the League Two campaign which, on reflection, which was probable a fair result.

It was Rushden who started the brighter, although it was the visitors who went close in the fifth minute when Jonjo Dickman went close after a Clyde Wijnhard layback.

On 13 minutes Carlos Logan saw his curling free-kick tipped brilliantly onto the post by Rushden keeper Jamie Young.

Darlington began to look the more dangerous and a speculative effort by Adrian Webster just went wide.

On 26 minutes Marcus Kelly broke clear down the left for Rushden but his shot was easily saved by Sam Russell, while four minutes later Wijnhard wasted a free-kick when he blasted well over from a good position from the edge of the box.

Rushden lost their captain Dave Savage due to an injury and he was replaced by sub Daniel Grainger.

The second half began with Kelly shooting across the face of the goal with his fellow forwards unable to put in a finishing touch.

However Darlington went ahead in the 58th minute when Neil McCafferty appeared to handle in the box and the linesman indicated to the referee his decision and Wijnhard easily converted to his spot-kick.

Rushden bounced back immediately and on 60 minutes David Bell grabbed an equaliser with a fine solo goal when he went on a 30-yard run before shooting past Russell into the corner of the net from the edge of the box.

Dickman went close for Darlington in the 66th minute when he saw his header land on the roof of the net.

On 87 minutes Rushden's Greg Pearson turned well in the area but his effort was inches over.

A minute later Darlington's skipper Matthew Clarke almost put the visitors ahead when he headed a Stephen Thomas corner just wide. And on the stroke of full-time Rushden almost grabbed a winner themselves when Grainger stole in at the back post but just missed.
