Match Preview

League remains main focus - Falcao Porto striker Falcao says his side's main focus remains on recapturing the Liga title - despite reaching the last-16 of the Europa League. Andre Villas-Boas' side are currently 11 points clear of bitter rivals and defending champions Benfica, but their attentions turn to European matters as they travel to Russia to face CSKA Moscow in this last-16 first leg tie. The Colombia international has already helped himself to seven goals in European competition so far this term and Porto's hopes of reaching the last eight appear to be high as CSKA have yet to win against the Portuguese side - and have also yet to score a goal against them. But Falcao is desperate to again experience the feeling of being a league champion. He won the Argentinian Clausura during his time with River Plate but has yet to repeat the feat in Portugal. "I want to make history with Porto, to win the league as I did with River Plate in Argentina," said the 25-year-old. "Nothing can top that." While his focus may be on domestic matters, the forward expects a tough test at the Luzhniki Stadium and knows they need a repeat of their efforts against Sevilla in the previous round if Porto are to progress. "It was a difficult tie against Sevilla and we were relieved to advance but now we'll have to be at our best once again if we are to get past CSKA," he continued. CSKA's hopes of improving on their dismal record against Porto have not been helped by a series of injury concerns for coach Leonid Slutsky. Former Manchester United winger Zoran Tosic will definitely miss the opening leg after suffering ankle ligament damage in the Russian Cup win over Shinnik Yaroslavl, while Aleksandrs Cauna and Mark Gonzalez are also struggling in the wake of Monday's Russian Super Cup loss to Zenit St Petersburg. "This is a real catastrophe," said Slutsky. "Add to this the fact that Mark Gonzalez still hasn't been given a precise diagnosis, and you begin to believe in mysticism. "We need to not only alter our tactics, but to do it in the course of the most important of games."

Match Report

Guarin strike enough for Porto Fredy Guarin's strike 20 minutes from time was enough to give Porto a narrow 1-0 Europa League advantage against CSKA Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium. The Colombia midfielder beat Igor Akinfeev from the edge of the box to give the Portuguese Liga leaders the advantage heading into the last-16 second leg. It was a fair enough result after Porto shaded the best of what chances there were, though both sides were in the main reduced to shooting from distance. Falcao tested Akinfeev after five minutes, the CSKA goalkeeper punching clear his shot from 18 yards. Guarin was next to try his luck moments later but his strike from distance was held by Akinfeev. Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez also sent in shots from outside the box before 10 minutes were up, but neither could test Akinfeev. After that the balance shifted with play moving largely down the other end. Helton held onto Vagner Love's shot from 12 yards in the 13th minute, then fisted away an 18-yard strike from the Brazilian. Their personal battle resumed in the 23rd minute with the goalkeeper punching clear another effort, before Kirill Nababkin fired Keisuke Honda's cross over the bar, but it was Porto who finished the half stronger. Akinfeev caught Falcao's free-kick and beat away Guarin's long-range effort, while Cristian Sapunaru's shot was wayward. It was more of the same after the break with plenty of shots raining in, but few from really dangerous areas. Joao Moutinho and Hulk both tried their luck but failed really to stretch Akinfeev. As Porto pressed the chances started to get better and Sapunaru headed Hulk's free-kick over the bar from 12 yards after 66 minutes. If either side was going to score, Porto seemed the more likely and so it proved as Guarin beat Akinfeev with a low strike from the edge of the box. That spurred CSKA into life, with Pavel Mamaev and Vagner Love both firing wide. Helton was called into action from Seydou Doumbia's shot, but he held on - and so did Porto.
