Match Preview

Gradi set to ring the changes Boss Dario Gradi could make changes against Southend as Crewe prepare for a fourth game in 11 days. Gradi, who has named the same starting XI for the last three matches, may have Matt Tootle available again. The full-back was on the bench against Chesterfield on Saturday following a two-game absence due to a virus. If fully-fit, he is a strong contender to come back into the side while Danny Shelley, who came off the bench to score a late free-kick and seal a 2-0 victory over the league leaders, may also have done enough to earn a start. Midfielder Joel Grant and forward Ajay Leitch-Smith are also options for Gradi although both are likely to be on the bench once again. Southend boss Paul Sturrock has a doubt over Peter Gilbert. The left-back suffered an ankle injury during the first half of Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Lincoln and, thus, had to be replaced by Miguel Comminges at half-time. Comminges will again fill in for Gilbert if he fails to recover in time to face the Railwaymen. Defender Bilel Mohsni remains sidelined with ankle ligament damage, but midfielder Kane Ferdinand is expected to retain his place after returning from an ankle injury against the Imps. Fellow midfielder Anthony Grant is pushing for a recall after replacing Craig Easton for the final 40 minutes at the weekend. The Shrimpers will be hoping to end a run of four league games without a win as they aim to keep their slim play-off hopes alive.

Match Report

Miller magic for Crewe Shaun Miller scored his 16th goal of the season to boost the Railwaymen's play-off push with a 1-0 victory which extended Southend's winless run to five games. Crewe had the best of the chances in a dire match. Dave Artell headed the ball against the crossbar from Danny Blanchett's corner before he nodded a free-kick straight at Southend goalkeeper Glen Morris. Lee Bell shaved the crossbar with a free-kick from the edge of the box and Clayton Donaldson should have done better than fire wide when cutting inside following a strong run. The Shrimps offered little in attack all game, but Barry Corr looked odds on to tuck away Lee Sawyer's centre before Artell made a vital last-ditch tackle. The visitors had to wait until the hour mark before they had their first shot on target, Ryan Hall's 20-yard effort forcing Ryan Taylor into a full-stretch save. But the Railwaymen took the lead in the 75th minute when Morris saved Donaldson's initial shot and Miller hooked the rebound home. Donaldson almost made it 2-0 when he raced onto Graham Coughlan's under-hit headed backpass, but his lob over the goalkeeper came back off the crossbar.
