Match Preview

Alex almost at full strength Crewe manager Steve Davis has a near fully-fit squad at his disposal for the visit of Shrewsbury. Ajay Leitch-Smith is back in contention for a place in attack after shaking off an ankle problem, leaving James Tunnicliffe as Alex's only injury absentee. On-loan Wycombe defender Tunnicliffe is stepping up his rehabilitation from a shoulder problem and may come into the reckoning for Tuesday's clash with Rotherham. Davis is urging the Railwaymen to build on their impressive home form following a battling 1-1 draw at local rivals Port Vale. "It was a very hard-fought draw against Port Vale and a good draw, but we will now move on to the Shrewsbury game," he told Crewe's official website. "We will be back at home where we have been doing well and are unbeaten in our last five games, so we will be very confident - especially after going a goal behind in the derby and coming back." Shrewsbury's Joe Jacobson continues to be troubled by a slight groin strain. The left-back passed a fitness test to play in Monday's 2-1 victory over promotion rivals Crawley but has not fully shrugged off the niggle and will again be assessed ahead of the encounter. Jermaine Grandison will come back into the heart of defence after he was forced to start on the bench in midweek having only arrived 15 minutes prior to kick-off after being held up in traffic on the M6. Grandison, stuck on the motorway with team-mate Romaine Sawyers, came on at half-time to take over from replacement Shane Cansdell-Sherriff. Fringe striker Tom Bradshaw comes back into the reckoning having missed out against Crawley due to international duty with Wales' Under-21s, stepping off the bench as a second-half substitute in his country's 4-0 win over Andorra. Marvin Morgan is likely to start in attack having replaced Terry Gornell at the break on Monday before going on to net the 74th-minute winner.

Match Report

Powell to the rescue for Alex Crewe youngster Nick Powell struck his ninth goal of the season to ensure honours ended even in the 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury. The visiting Shrews took a sixth-minute lead when Alex keeper Steve Phillips' clearance hit the back of James Collins and looped into the open net. Crewe, however, were soon level thanks to Powell. The midfielder won a free-kick and then glanced Ashley Westwood's resultant cross home from close range after 22 minutes. Shrewsbury threatened but Jon Taylor shot straight at Phillips from 12 yards and the keeper stood up well to pull off a stunning stop to prevent Collins from scoring, after the striker had left Harry Davis on his backside. Powell also blew a great chance himself, screwing wide with a gaping goal after a fine run from Byron Moore. Greg Pearson should have put Crewe ahead after the break, but the striker came out second best in a one-on-one with keeper Chris Neal after Ian Sharps' air-shot gave him all the time in the world to pick his spot. Sharps could have settled it himself when he rose unmarked to power in Matt Richards' corner, but Phillips did well to gather the ball on the line and Shrews substitute Romaine Sawyers flashed a shot inches wide at the death.
