Match Preview

Westy in line for Alex return Ashley Westwood looks likely to return to the Crewe starting line-up when local rivals Port Vale visit Gresty Road. Westwood was replaced in midfield by fellow academy product Danny Shelley after picking up a knock during last weekend`s win over Wycombe. Shelley started the defeat at Torquay on Tuesday night and scored a superb free-kick, but boss Dario Gradi has dropped a strong hint that he will not keep his place in the team. "Danny scored a terrific free-kick, which got us back into the game. However, I won't be inclined to play him on Saturday because Westy will be available again," said Gradi. Westwood`s inclusion is likely to be the only change made by Gradi, meaning Shelley will probably be joined on the bench by Nick Powell, Calvin Zola, Joel Grant and Adam Dugdale. Port Vale manager Jim Gannon is not expected to have any new injury concerns as he kicks off his league reign. Gannon, appointed as Micky Adams' successor, took charge for the first time last Saturday as the Valiants went down 4-2 at Burnley in their FA Cup third-round tie. With the postponement of Tuesday's scheduled clash against Hereford, he has been able to use this week to great effect to work with his squad and fully start to implement his ideas. But his plans continue to be without leading scorer Marc Richards (thigh) and influential midfielder Doug Loft (calf) until next month. Louis Dodds was employed as a second striker to Justin Richards at Turf Moor in the absence of namesake Marc, with winger Lewis Haldane recalled to Vale`s starting line-up, and Gannon could name an unchanged XI at Gresty Road. Other options for possible change include midfielders Sean Rigg, Tommy Fraser and youngster Sam Morsy, who earned a surprise half-time introduction from the bench against the Clarets.

Match Report

Gannon off to poor start Substitute Adam Dugdale's first goal for Crewe gave them a 2-1 win and ruined Jim Gannon's first league game in charge of Port Vale. Justin Richard's second-half penalty cancelled out Shaun Miller's opener but Dugdale came off the bench to grab Crewe the derby-day bragging rights. Richards had fired wide for the visitors before Robert Taylor's cross-cum-shot almost caught out Crewe goalkeeper Rhys Taylor as vale started brightly. Dave Artell make a timely block to stop Richards netting from Rob Taylor's cross but Crewe took the lead in the 18th minute with their first shot of the match. Clayton Donaldson played in Miller who turned Gareth Owen before curling the ball into the bottom corner. Miller should have doubled his account but he failed to get his boots to Byron Moore's cross across the face of goal. Rob Taylor went close with another long-range effort at the other end before Vale keeper Stuart Tomlinson had to smother the ball at the feet of Donaldson. Rhys Taylor produced a stunning save to keep out Rob Taylor's drilled half-volley but then brought down Richards in the box. Richards stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot to level matters with 58 minutes gone. Crewe were denied a penalty themselves minutes later when Gareth Owen appeared to handle the ball in his own box as Ashley Westwood shaped up to shoot. But Dugdale headed the winner in the 82nd minute when the substitute, on for the injured Artell, rose and directed Ashley Westwood's corner into the far corner of the net.
