Match Preview

Gradi looks to Taylor Crewe manager Dario Gradi will continue with Rhys Taylor in goal for the clash with Oxford, although Steve Phillips is closing in on a return. Phillips, 32, has been out of action all summer after undergoing surgery on both shoulders, but returned to training this week with the youth team. He is scheduled to resume first-team training next week as he begins his comeback to competitive action. Carl Martin is out of the clash at Gresty Road with a shin complaint, although skipper Lee Bell should be fine despite suffering with flu this week. Meanwhile, 16-year-old striker Nick Powell staked his claim for a first-team spot by scoring for the reserves as they defeated Blackburn 2-0 in midweek. Oxford manager Chris Wilder will keep the same central defence for the clash against Crewe despite last week's shock 1-0 home defeat to Stockport. Mark Creighton and Harry Worley will once again lead the backline after Damien Batt was still ruled out with an ankle injury. Jake Wright is making good progress from his back injury and could return to the squad in the next couple of weeks and, although Rhys Day has returned to training, this game comes too soon for the defender. United midfielder Simon Clist took part in the reserves game in midweek after returning to training and could go straight into the squad to face Alexandra.

Match Report

Constable on target James Constable grabbed United a share of the spoils before being sent off after Chris Wilder's men conceded their first away goal of the season in a 1-1 draw. Oxford had gone 408 minutes without letting in a goal on their travels when David Artell headed in his first-half opener for Crewe. But Constable levelled on the rebound after the break and then got his marching orders with three minutes to go to mark his 100th game in memorable fashion. The visitors had looked impenetrable with Crewe restricted to a long-range Lee Bell effort and a Shaun Miller free-kick which rattled the side-netting. But Artell rose unmarked to convert Ashley Westwood's 38th-minute corner kick. The Railwaymen should have extended their lead when Shaun Miller played in Clayton Donaldson but keeper Ryan Clarke did well to palm away his shot. Luke Murphy then saw his far-post effort fly across the face of Clarke's goal after more good work from Miller. But United levelled in the 70th minute when Tom Craddock caught Crewe on the break and played in Constable who netted at the second attempt after a good save from Rhys Taylor. Crewe thought Miller had netted winner, but after consulting with his linesman referee Geoff Eltringham rightly ruled the striker offside. Constable saw red with three minutes to go after picking up his second yellow for a late foul on Matt Tootle.
