Match Preview

Artell set to miss out for Alex Crewe defender David Artell is a major doubt for the visit of Gillingham. The centre-half suffered a recurrence of the calf injury that kept him out for a fortnight against Rotherham last weekend. Academy product Adam Dugdale is on stand-by to fill in once again. Shaun Miller missed the trip to south Yorkshire with the thigh strain that forced him off at Northampton. The striker is rated at 50/50 to return at the weekend. Fellow forward Clayton Donaldson completes a three-match ban. January Manager of the Month Dario Gradi has options should he wish to make changes. Danny Blanchett, Joel Grant, Nick Powell and Antoni Sarcevic are available for recalls. Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler is likely to be without defender Matt Lawrence. The right-back limped out of the 3-1 midweek win over Rotherham after 25 minutes with a thigh/groin problem and is almost certain to miss out against the Railwaymen. Winger Andy Barcham will miss out again after receiving another injection to treat his ankle injury, while defender Josh Gowling (knock) and midfielder Joe Martin (cheekbone) also miss out. However, defenders Tony Sinclair, Garry Richards and Simon King will be involved despite all suffering from ankle problems. Sinclair returns to the matchday squad hoping for his first appearance since November 23, while Richards retains his place despite undergoing an injection. King is also fine to retain his place despite playing 65 minutes on his return from almost 19 months on the sidelines against the Millers.

Match Report

Weston super strike for Gills Curtis Weston's 25-yard screamer saw Gillingham stretch their unbeaten run to five games with a 1-1 draw which keeps Crewe out of the play-off zone. Weston struck after the break to cancel out team-mate Tony Sinclair's first-half own goal. Danny Shelley went close for Crewe with an early effort before scuffing wide after being picked out by Ajay Leitch-Smith Byron Moore also teed up the busy Shelley but goalkeeper Alan Julian saved well with his feet. The Gills' plans suffered an early blow when Simon King's first start in 21 months was cut short by injury after just 17 minutes. And things got worse when his replacement Sinclair turned Shelley's low cross into his own net 10 minutes later. The visitors had offered little with Adebayo Akinfenwa's long-range effort blocked by Dave Artell before strike partner Cody McDonald could tuck it away. But the Gills were level 10 minutes after the break when Weston netted with a rising 25-yard thunderbolt that left keeper Rhys Taylor with no chance. Akinfenwa then saw his goalbound snapshot kept out by Taylor before Luke Murphy was denied at the other end by a good stop from Julian. Murphy blazed another effort over the bar as Crewe pressed for a late winner.
