Match Preview

Taylor set for Alex return Rhys Taylor will regain the number one jersey when Crewe host Cheltenham. Experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips got a rare start at Hereford on Sunday, with Taylor away on international duty with Wales` Under-21 side. But the on-loan Chelsea youngster is set to come back into the team against the Robins. "There's no reason for me to leave Rhys out. He's had a decent season and he`s our number one," said manager Dario Gradi. "Steve didn't have a real chance to show what he can do at Hereford as he didn't have any saves to make but his turn will come and I expect him to kick off next season as our number one." Midfielder Ashley Westwood is expected to be fit despite suffering a rib injury at Hereford. Ajay Leitch-Smith will miss out again and the striker is now targeting the trip to Barnet on April 9 for his return from a hamstring injury. Cheltenham will be without Keith Lowe for the trip to Crewe after the right-back was ruled out for a few weeks. Lowe was forced off in the 21st minute of last weekend`s 2-1 home defeat to Gillingham nursing a heavy ankle knock which has subsequently sidelined him for the short term. Versatile midfielder David Bird came on in his place to slot into a familiar position at the back and he is again likely to occupy the full-back slot at Gresty Road, unless manager Mark Yates opts to turn to centre-back Andy Gallinagh. Otherwise, Yates has a fully-fit squad to select from as the Robins look to overturn a sorry sequence of just two wins in 14 to finish the season on a high. Town were level on points with the play-off places before their dip in form but now stand 13 points adrift, still needing another win to be all but mathematically safe from relegation.

Match Report

Great eight in Robins rout Clayton Donaldson and Joel Grant both scored hat-tricks as Crewe thrashed Cheltenham 8-1. Crewe boss Dario Gradi missed Crewe's first win in four games after leaving the ground with a throat infection before kick-off. Assistant boss Steve Davis took the reins and the visitors found themselves 4-0 down after just 37 minutes. Donaldson beat the offside trap to pick up Shaun Miller's through-ball and open the scoring with four minutes gone. Seven minutes later Miller beat goalkeeper Scott Brown to Danny Shelley's pass and rolled a simple finish into the empty net. Donaldson turned home Shelley's pinpoint 33rd-minute cross and then Joel Grant made it 4-0 four minutes later after goalkeeper Rhys Taylor`s long ball put the forward clean through. The visitors mustered a couple of half chances in response but Brian Smikle`s volley was blocked and Danny Andrew blasted over after a good move. Wesley Thomas gave the Robins hope when he finished at the near post five minutes after the break. But Ashley R Westwood restored Crewe's four-goal advantage when he sidefooted in Matt Tootle's low cross. Donaldson completed his hat-trick from the spot when Steve Elliott was penalised for handling in the box before Grant got his second, tucking home the rebound after Brown saved his initial shot. Grant also claimed his hat-trick with a penalty with three minutes to go when Andy Gallinagh tripped Donaldson in the area.
