Match Preview

Crewe without loan defender Crewe will be without on-loan Wycombe defender James Tunnicliffe for the re-arranged npower League Two visit of Accrington. Tunnicliffe dislocated his shoulder during Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Southend and is due to go for a scan on Tuesday, although the damage is not thought to be as serious as first feared and Alex boss Steve Davis expects to have him back in action in 10 days. Harry Davis is set to come in for Tunnicliffe at centre-back as Adam Dugdale serves the final game of a three-match suspension. Striker Ajay Leitch-Smith and winger Byron Moore are targeting a return for Saturday's game with AFC Wimbledon as they continue to recover from ankle injuries. Nick Powell should be fit to resume his place in attack after receiving treatment for a lower back problem picked up at Roots Hall. Sean Hessey will travel with the Accrington squad to face Crewe and have his hamstring injury assessed before kick-off. Defender Hessey failed to train as a result of the problem last week, but is back in contention as new boss Paul Cook looks to recover from a nightmare start to life at the Crown Ground. Stanley went down 4-0 at home to Plymouth in Cook's first game in charge and the prospect of a fully-fit squad means the former Sligo Rovers manager could make changes. On-loan Hull midfielder Jamie Devitt made his debut from the bench against Argyle and could be in line to start alongside forward Padraig Amond, who played the final half hour on Saturday. Cook accepts a quick turnaround in fixtures is not ideal early on in his tenure and will focus on greater defensive solidity at Gresty Road. "You don't have much time to work with them and that's the hard part, so it's a case of regrouping and lifting the spirits quickly," he told the Lancashire Telegraph. "Certainly at Crewe we want to be stronger defensively, we'll worry about scoring goals later."

Match Report

Alex chase play-off place Goals from Max Clayton and Luke Murphy gave Crewe a 2-0 win over Accrington to keep them on the fringes of the npower League Two play-off race. Young striker Clayton volleyed home on the turn on 81 minutes when Ashley Westwood's corner was not cleared. And Murphy settled a scrappy match with a cool finish in stoppage time. It is now two defeats in two matches for Paul Cook since taking over at Accrington last week. Until Clayton's strike, the main talking point was referee Robert Madley's failure to award a penalty when Stanley defender Aristote Nsiala appeared to handball inside his own area on 27 minutes. Greg Pearson had a shot blocked by Dean Winnard after he cut inside the Accrington box. Jamie Devitt tested Crewe goalkeeper Steve Phillips, however Madley enraged Alex further by booking Nick Powell for diving when he appeared to be tripped by Kevin McIntyre. Accrington claimed handball against Pearson but once Clayton found the net, there was only one winner. Miller wrapped it up from the edge of the box after good work from Nick Powell.
