Match Report

Norwich City flattered to deceive in their first Championship encounter.

After Dean Ashton had given them a first-half lead, Stephen Bywater marked his Coventry debut with some accomplished goalkeeping that kept the visitors in the game and enabled Dele Adebola to snatch a second-half equaliser.

After a quiet opening Bywater did well to keep out Ashton's 30 yard free-kick in the 20th minute, but could do nothing about his bullet header, from Dean Marney's right-wing cross a minute later.

Ten minutes later Bywater dived smartly to his right to keep out Leon McKenzie's low left-foot drive, before, at the other end, Robert Green had to be at his best to hold on to Gary McSheffrey's driven cross from the left-wing.

In stoppage-time Marney, on a season long loan from Spurs, came close to a goal when his fierce drive was blocked by Marcus Hall.

Ten minutes into the second-half Ashton had his shirt pulled in the Coventry penalty area, but referee Richard Beeby failed to notice the offence, in a game in which he spotted nearly 40 fouls, evenly distributed between the two sides.

At the other end Green was at full stretch to tip McSheffrey's 25-yard free-kick onto his right-hand post.

Bywater was also at full stretch, once again denying McKenzie when he broke through the Coventry defence. The save proved crucial, because in the 65th minute Coventry equalised when Adebola fired into the roof of the net from McSheffrey's left-wing cross.

After 74 minutes Bywater clung on to Marney's low cross from the right with McKenzie and Ashton waiting to pounce if he spilled the ball.

Ashton's header from Huckerby's left-wing cross then hit the bar and bounced over, before the Norwich goalscorer appeared to be held down in the penalty area as he attempted to make contact with a cross.

Once again Mr Beeby saw nothing wrong and the home side had to settle for a point, when on their first-half showing they had looked more than capable of taking all three.
