Match Preview

Duo missing for Sky Blues Coventry will be without Freddy Eastwood and Ben Turner for the visit of promotion favourites and local rivals Leicester on the opening day of the season. Striker Eastwood is missing with a hamstring injury while centre-back Turner has still not recovered from the troublesome knee problem which dogged him last season. Manager Andy Thorn will also make late checks on a few players, including midfielder Gary Deegan, striker Clive Platt and defender Jordan Clarke, who have all struggled with niggling knocks during pre-season. Summer signing Joe Murphy is set to make his debut in goal for the Sky Blues with Keiren Westwood having departed to Sunderland during the close season. Midfielder Sammy Clingan will skipper the side for the forthcoming campaign. Sven-Goran Eriksson begins his first full season as Leicester manager with a full squad to choose from. The Swede made his 10th summer signing on Thursday with the acquisition of Gelson Fernandes on loan from Saint Etienne. Swiss international Fernandes, who played under Eriksson at Manchester City, will go straight into the squad if his international clearance comes through in time. Likewise John Pantsil, signed last month after leaving Fulham, is still awaiting a work permit but will be involved should the club receive it ahead of Saturday. Fellow new recruits Kasper Schmeichel, Lee Peltier, Matt Mills, Paul Konchesky, Neil Danns, David Nugent, Sean St. Ledger and Michael Johnson are all fit and eligible.

Match Report

Foxes begin with win Sven-Goran Eriksson`s big-spending Leicester got their much-fancied bid for promotion from the npower Championship off to winning start as they triumphed 1-0 over local rivals Coventry in an eventful M69 derby. Right-back Lee Peltier, Eriksson`s first of 10 signings this summer, grabbed the vital breakthrough in the 52nd minute as he nodded home an inch-perfect cross from Richie Wellens. But the encounter was shaped by the first-half dismissals of Darius Vassell and Carl Baker - one apiece for both sides - for reckless challenges which left referee Darren Deadman no option but to brandish red twice. Nevertheless, for Leicester - who also hit the post through David Nugent - it was a winning start to a campaign which promises plenty having been bankrolled heavily over the summer by Thai-based Asia Football Investments consortium, fronted by Vichai and Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn. For Coventry, who narrowly avoided administration in March and continue to look for much-needed investment, it could be a long season as they embark on an 11th successive campaign in the second tier - the longest of any club currently in the Championship. Eriksson handed debuts to seven of his new arrivals - Peltier, Nugent, Kasper Schmeichel, Paul Konchesky, Gelson Fernandes, Neil Danns and skipper Matt Mills all starting. In stark contrast, goalkeeper Joe Murphy - one of just two new faces at the Ricoh Arena - was the only Sky Blues debutant, with youngsters Cyrus Christie and Gael Bigirimana handed their full league debuts. Leicester`s ambitious campaign which got off to the worst possible start when Vassell was rightfully given his marching orders for a studs-up challenge on Richard Keogh near the halfway line. The former England striker`s dismissal certainly raised the tails of unfancied Coventry but it was the visitors, however, who almost opened the scoring midway through the first half as Nugent drilled an effort across goal which narrowly eluded Danns. Despite the hosts` dominance they were unable to find the quality needed in the final third to really make a difference and keeper Schmeichel was tested for the first time in the 37th minute as he tipped David Bell`s long-range effort over the bar. And within two minutes Coventry`s numerical advantage was wiped out as Baker saw red for another needless challenge on Wellens. The swing of the game changed almost immediately and Leicester came closest to breaking the deadlock as Nugent headed Danns` cross against the inside of a post and watched as the ball fortunately fell straight into the arms of Murphy, with the visitors finishing the half the stronger. Leicester started the second half where they finished the first and a well-placed Nugent should have done better from Konchesky`s cross but he could only fire wide. But he was reprieved shortly after as Wellens succeeded where Coventry had failed - with a great delivery into the penalty area - which was met by the head of Peltier. Eriksson`s charges looked more likely to add to their opener as the second half wore on but Sky Blues skipper Sammy Clingan reminded the visitors of their own threat with a 72nd-minute effort which was parried by Schmeichel. But, as you would expect on the opening day of a new season, the encounter petered out over the final 15 minutes and Leicester ran out narrowly deserved winners. endM
