Match Preview

Late test for Westwood Coventry goalkeeper Keiren Westwood will undergo a fitness test on Friday to determine whether he lines up against Hull. The Republic of Ireland stopper pulled a hip muscle in the 4-1 home defeat to Bristol City last Saturday before being replaced by Danny Ireland, who also finished the game with a similar problem himself. Both missed Tuesday`s 1-1 draw at Doncaster, with third-choice Michael Quirke stepping in. Ireland is ruled out ahead of this weekend but Westwood is battling to be involved and City`s medical staff will make a decision ahead of the game, with Quirke again on standby. Manager Aidy Boothroyd will check on sidelined striker Clive Platt (calf) but defender Richard Wood is expected to be okay despite taking a couple of blows at the Keepmoat Stadium. Marlon King serves the second game of his four-match ban for the red card received against the Robins, while captain Lee Carsley (Achilles and hernia) and centre-back Ben Turner (knee) continue to miss out. Hull will be without goalkeeper Vito Mannone for the clash. Mannone, on loan from Arsenal, has sustained a thigh injury similar to the one that sidelined him throughout January and February, so another loanee, Aston Villa's Brad Guzan, will return to the starting line-up. Manager Nigel Pearson is hoping Mannone recovers his fitness before Guzan's loan spell expires after the clash at Watford on April 9. Defender Liam Rosenior has missed training this week due to a foot injury sustained in last weekend's win at Nottingham Forest, but is expected to recover in time. Recent loan signing from Liverpool, winger David Amoo, is hoping to make his first start for the Tigers, while Tijani Belaid, Jack Hobbs, Tom Cairney and Richard Garcia are all pushing for first-team recalls. Pearson has no other new injury or suspension problems as his side look to make up ground on the top six after two defeats in their last three games.

Match Report

Tigers reignite promotion charge after win Hull got their npower Championship play-off challenge back on track and set a new club record for unbeaten away league matches in the process. Aaron Mclean's 33rd-minute finish was the bright point of a scrappy first half at the Ricoh Arena. Coventry, who failed to register a shot on target during the opening 45 minutes, were much improved after the break and came close to equalising on several occasions but efforts from Richard Wood and Aron Gunnarsson were cleared off the line. Hull held on to make it 14 games without defeat on their travels, beating the previous record set during the 1948-49 season. It was announced before the game that Coventry boss Aidy Boothroyd will climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Comic Relief, and his side certainly have a mountain to overcome after the result extended their poor run to only one win in the last 16 Championship matches. Keiren Westwood returned in goal for Coventry after missing the midweek draw at Doncaster due to a hip injury. Hull also made one change, with Tom Cairney replacing Nick Barmby. The majority of the first half got bogged down in midfield as both sides struggled to create chances. Gunnarsson's long throws gave Hull a few hairy moments, while in between Robert Koren should have really done better than glance his near-post header wide from Liam Rosenior's cross. The only goal of the game arrived when Matty Fryatt chased down a long ball forward before teeing up strike partner Mclean, who arrived from nowhere to thump a low shot past Westwood. Coventry enjoyed their only real spell of pressure either side of the hour mark and might have levelled on three separate occasions. Wood had a header cleared off the line before Gunnarsson's shot from the edge of the box struck a defender a yard in front of the goal. Wood then had another effort hacked off the line. However, Boothroyd's side failed to build on those chances and should have fallen further behind when Mclean went through one-on-one but Westwood made a superb block. Coventry's momentum had gone and the game petered out during the remainder of the second half. Anthony Gerrard headed over the crossbar and Fryatt worked Westwood as Hull threatened again late on.
