It's 3pm on Saturday, August 13th, the match has kicked off.
Burnley cruised to their first points of the season by crushing ten-man Coventry City at Turf Moor. The Clarets strode to a two-goal lead before half-time as Garreth O'Connor and Wayne Thomas both scored their first goals for the club. And Ade Akinbiyi wrapped up the victory with two late goals to leave Micky Adams men crushed. The sparks really flew two minutes before the break when, with Burnley leading by two goals, City skipper Stephen Hughes was sent off for using foul and abusive language towards the assistant referee, who flagged to award Burnley a controversial penalty following Matt Heath's innocuous tug on Gifton Noel-Williams. Hughes, who stormed over to protest, was instantly shown red by referee Nigel Miller and then had to be restrained and pulled away from the linesman by coaching staff. To add to the drama, Noel-Williams then stepped up to balloon the resultant spot-kick over at the bar. Garreth O'Connor had earlier got the Clarets off to a perfect start in the 28th minute, clinically finishing off a four-man move from the edge of the area. City striker Gary McSheffrey then clipped the crossbar with an audacious long-range shot before Thomas doubled the lead in the 37th minute with a bullet header. City were thrown into turmoil following Hughes' dismissal and Garreth O'Connor and Akinbiyi should have added to the tally before half-time. The Sky Blues fired a warning in first-half stoppage-time when James Scowcroft smacked the crossbar for the second time with a near post header. But, there was to be no way back for the visitors who charged forward to try to salvage something from the game in the second half. Burnley continued to exploit the gaps and James O'Connor blazed just over the angle before Stephen Bywater saved superbly from Akinbiyi. However, Burnley's big striker finally got his reward late in the game, rifling home from Noel-Williams' precision pass in the 87th minute and tapping home from close range in stoppage-time.
