Match Report

Two uncharacteristic goalkeeping errors early in the match presented Colchester United with three last day points at Yeovil Town.

Chris Weale has been Yeovil's hero on several occasions since returning to his first club on loan from Bristol City - but on this occasion it all went wrong.

In the 13th minute Mark Yeates, who had an excellent game for Colchester, tricked Terrell Forbes to lay on a cross for Ashley Vincent and the man on loan from Cheltenham fired under Weale's diving body to put them ahead.

Two minutes later it was Yeates himself who provided goal number two. He picked up a pass from Simon Hackney and a shot that Weale would normally have saved bounced over the keeper and inside his near post.

Yeovil set about attempting to right the damage but it wasn't their day. Jonathan Obika slipped as he was about to shoot in the 35th minute and, as Yeovil continued to press, a cross from Andros Townsend looped off defender Pat Baldwin and over the bar.

There was more Yeovil pressure in the second half although they had to be constantly on the alert as Colchester broke with speed and precision, Yeates always in the thick of things.

It was now the turn of Colchester keeper Dean Gerken to be busier. In the 49th minute he threw himself to his left to make a fine save from Obika's 18-yard drive and later in the game he brought off another superb save when defender Craig Alcock moved up to join in with the attack.

Gerken was beaten on one occasion in the 57th minute. A powerful drive from just inside the box by Kieran Murtagh rebounded off the base of a post with the keeper well beaten.
