Gillespie set for Us return Colchester striker Steven Gillespie could make his first start of the season against Wycombe. Gillespie continued his recovery from a groin injury by coming off the bench to score in extra-time before the Us succumbed to a penalty shootout defeat to Wycombe in the Carling Cup on Tuesday. With several players completing the full 120 minutes in midweek, manager John Ward could opt to freshen up his side with Gillespie pushing for a starting place. Midfielder Andy Bond is unlikely to be involved after missing the first two games of the season after suffering a serious head injury in a pre-season friendly against Ipswich. Goalkeeper Ben Williams (viral infection) and midfielder Jordan Sanderson (foot) again miss out but summer signing Karl Duguid could feature. Matt Bloomfield and Elliot Benyon could return to the Wycombe squad for their second game in five days. Midfielder Bloomfield and on-loan striker Benyon missed the Carling Cup victory over the Us on Tuesday night but have since resumed full training. Bloomfield has recovered from a groin operation while Benyon is back following a broken hand. However, a lack of match practice means neither are likely to start at the Weston Homes Community Stadium and a place on the bench is the best they can hope for. Manager Gary Waddock could make changes following the game in midweek, with striker Ben Strevens available after serving a one-match suspension for the red card he saw on the opening day against Scunthorpe. Danny Foster and Dave Winfield could return in defence while midfielder Gareth Ainsworth and striker Scott Rendell will also be in the frame for recalls. Stuart Lewis has made progress in his recovery from the virus that has ruled him out so far this season and he could return to training on Monday.
