Tierney boost for U's Unbeaten Colchester expect Marc Tierney to be available for the visit of Tranmere. The left-back was forced off during the first half of last weekend's goalless draw at Southampton after picking up a hip injury but returned to training on Tuesday and has declared himself fit. Centre-half Pat Baldwin will be checked over after suffering an ankle injury at St Mary's, with Paul Reid standing by to replace him. Right-back Brian Wilson (ankle) missed the trip to the south coast and is also being monitored. Striker Steven Gillespie is pushing to be involved for the first time this season after recovering from ankle trouble but midfielder John-Joe O'Toole and defender Morten Knudsen (both knee) remain long-term absentees. Tranmere boss Les Parry will assess the fitness of several players. Liam Darville, Paul McLaren, Ian Thomas-Moore and Adam McGurk are all nursing injuries and will be monitored closely. Parry said: "We were hoping Liam Darville, Paul McLaren and Ian Thomas-Moore may be available. "Adam McGurk is the biggest question mark. The other three may be available if we need them." The size of Rovers' casualty list could have an impact on whether or not loan players Jermaine Grandison and Arnaud Mendy remain at Prenton Park beyond the middle of next week. Parry added: "I'd like to keep both of them but I can't afford to be keeping players we don't need."

Us extend unbeaten start Colchester extended their unbeaten league run to eight matches with a comprehensive 3-1 win over struggling Tranmere. The hosts took a seventh-minute lead through on-loan striker David Mooney, who fired decisively past Tranmere goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi after David Perkins' shot had been deflected into his path from Anthony Wordsworth's corner. Ashley Vincent went close soon after before Wordsworth doubled the Us lead in the 16th minute with a delightful 20-yard free-kick which flew in at the near post. Colchester took further control on the half-hour mark when Magnus Okuonghae headed home from close range, after Andrew Bond had volleyed Wordsworth's free-kick goalwards. Tranmere improved a little after the break and Enoch Showunmi sent a shot flying over from a short free-kick for the visitors. Gulacsi denied Vincent and Bond blasted over from close range, before Gulacsi dived to his right to save Wordsworth's penalty with 10 minutes to go. Showunmi raced through and finished neatly with eight minutes to go for Tranmere's consolation but it was a comfortable win for the Us.
