Match Preview

Us to monitor Mooney David Mooney could be fit for Colchester's clash with Sheffield Wednesday despite leaving the field on a stretcher in midweek. The on-loan striker scored two goals in Tuesday night's 3-0 Carling Cup win at Hereford but was carried off with an ankle injury in the closing stages. However, having briefly returned to parent club Reading for treatment, Mooney was hoping to resume training on Friday ahead of the visit of the Owls. Midfielder Andy Bond also came off at Edgar Street with a knock but he too could be available. Goalkeeper Ben Williams is expected to miss out again with an ankle problem so Mark Cousins keeps his place. Midfielder John-Joe O'Toole and defender Morten Knudsen are long-term absentees with knee injuries. Wednesday pair Marcus Tudgay and Chris Sedgwick are expected to return to the starting line-up. Striker Tudgay and midfielder Sedgwick were rested for the midweek Carling Cup win over Bury as manager Alan Irvine made six changes to the side that beat Dagenham & Redbridge on the opening day. Irvine, who has no new injury or suspension problems, will be without winger Jermaine Johnson (knee) for another eight weeks and has several selection dilemmas as his side look to continue their winning run. Irvine handed starts to Paul Heffernan, Daniel Jones, Darren Potter, Liam Palmer, Neil Mellor and Jon Otsemobor against Bury and must now decide who to keep faith with for the Owls' first away league clash of the season.

Match Report

Mellor rescues Owls Substitute Neil Mellor grabbed a late equaliser to secure a point for Sheffield Wednesday in a 1-1 draw at Colchester. Mellor fired in powerfully from close range after the U's defence had failed to clear their lines to cancel out Andrew Bond's opener. Ian Henderson's fierce 25-yard drive flashed just wide for Colchester early on, while Clinton Morrison saw his close-range effort blocked by a combination of the post and Paul Reid. But Colchester were ahead, five minutes into the second half. A flowing attack saw Henderson pick out Andrew Bond, who curled a superb shot with the outside of his boot past Nicky Weaver from 20 yards for his first ever league goal. David Mooney came agonisingly close to doubling Colchester's lead soon after when his well-struck low shot came back off the foot of the post, with Weaver beaten again. But Mellor powered his way through to score with six minutes to go to secure Alan Irvine's side a share of the spoils.
