Match Report

Clive Platt snatched a winner for Colchester United and new manager Paul Lambert with just three minutes left on the clock.

Stockport had been on top but Platt latched onto David Perkins' flick before lashing home from an angle.

Colchester ought to have gone in front after just 10 seconds. Stockport centre-back Jaroslaw Fojut was robbed on the edge of the box by Stephen Gillespie, but he wastefully screwed a shot well wide.

The hosts soon started to dictate proceedings though and on 15 minutes Carl Baker tried a cheeky chip which goalkeeper Dean Gerken stretched to save.

Stephen Gleeson then crossed for Matty McNeil, but his header dropped inches wide.

It was the U's who went in front on 20 minutes. Platt crossed from the right and little Perkins raced in to side-foot home from eight yards.

Stockport went in search of a quick leveller but it didn't come until three minutes before half-time.

Leon McSweeney swung in a deep cross from the right and there was the lanky McNeil, who headed home on his first appearance of the season.

McNeil was stretchered off minutes after the restart after clashing heads with Paul Reid - an incident which looked nasty and held the game up for more than five minutes.

Once the game resumed, Stockport really upped the tempo and Baker saw a shot well gathered by Gerken.

At the other end, Colchester sub Akanni-Sunday Wasiu teed up Mark Yeates but he blasted over from just inside the box.

With eight minutes left, Gerken produced a brilliant save to tip over an strike from the impressive McSweeney.
