It's 3pm on Saturday, September 9th, the match has kicked off.
Turf Moor provided the venue for Colchester United's first away points of the season with a 2-1 victory over Burnley thanks to goals from Kevin Watson and Chris Iwelumo. The visitors withstood early pressure and took the lead with a swift counter-attack on 26 minutes, as a diagonal pass from Karl Duguid found striker Jamie Cureton whose cross from the by-line was turned in at the far post by Watson. The goal was harsh on the home side who had dominated proceedings up to that point, with Aidan Davison making saves from Andy Gray and Alan Mahon and then twice demonstrating good handling skills by plucking from the air two corners from Mahon. Kyle Lafferty almost got Burnley back on level terms immediately with a strike from 20 yards which Davison did well to turn behind for a corner. Micah Hyde then drove a shot over the crossbar from 25 yards with the Colchester defence backing off and inviting a strike on goal. Colchester were forced to make a change just prior to the break with midfielder Kemal Izzet being stretchered off and being replaced by John White. The visitors extended their lead eight minutes into the second half with a controversial penalty awarded by referee Oliver after Mahon had lost possession. Greg Halford and Iwelumo combined and found Richard Garcia who went down under a challenge from central defender John McGreal. After consulting his assistant the referee confirmed the award of the spot-kick from which Iwelumo sent Clarets keeper Brian Jensen the wrong way. Clarets boss Steve Cotterill responded with a triple substitution which saw the remainder of the game played in and around the Colchester penalty area. With 20 minutes remaining Mahon fired a free-kick just over the crossbar and Gifton Noel-Williams headed over a centre from Wade Elliott. The two substitutes combined again as Noel-Williams met Elliott's cross on the volley and forced the game's outstanding save from the ever-alert Davison. Davison's determination to keep a clean sheet was again evident as he foiled Noel-Williams after 85 minutes, but he was eventually beaten two minutes from time as striker Andy Gray scrambled the ball over the line from close range after good work down the left-hand side by Jon Harley. Gray should have earned a draw for his team, but his header in stoppage time lacked the power to beat the outstanding Davison.
