Match Preview

Villarreal gunning for top spot Having already secured their place in the last 32 of the Europa League, Villarreal go in search of the victory that will also guarantee them top spot in Group D when they take on eliminated Club Brugge. Juan Carlos Garrido's side ensured they would be playing European football after Christmas after defeating Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 at El Madrigal in their last outing. That result left the Yellow Submarine with nine points, one above second-placed PAOK and two clear of Dinamo - with those two sides battling for the last remaining qualification spot in the other game. Club Brugge, meanwhile, are out of contention as they have only recorded three points from their five games so far and are without a victory. Villarreal go into the match having suffered a rare setback, going down to a last-gasp goal against nine-man Getafe at the weekend. That was only Villarreal's fifth defeat in 24 games this season - 15 of which have been won - and playmaker Santi Cazorla believes having a midweek match will serve them well. "We need to think about the game against Brugge and maybe it will be good to have a game so soon to help us forget as soon as possible what happened at Getafe," said the Spain international, who turned 26 yesterday. "Hopefully we can have a good game, get three points and be group winners, because that would give us a great peace of mind." He added: "Although we are already qualified, we are playing for a lot and we have to give it everything. We've done our homework, but any team can cause you problems and I'm sure they will want to do well in front of their fans." Cazorla's team-mate Borja Valero said: "Winning would give us confidence and morale for the following round. "I don't think the fact they are eliminated means they are going to make it easy for us, in fact just the opposite because I'm sure they will want to gain revenge." Club Brugge, who lost 2-1 at El Madrigal earlier in the group phase following Ronald Vargas's first-half red card, have had an inconsistent season so far, winning 12 and losing 10 of their 28 matches in all competitions. Adrie Koster's men have yet to string three successive victories together either, although they can achieve that with a win over Villarreal having beaten Westerlo and Mechelen in their last two matches. Those wins have left Club Brugge in sixth spot in the Belgian top flight, 12 points behind leaders Genk.

Match Report

Rossi earns Villarreal top spot Giuseppe Rossi struck twice as Villarreal fought back from a goal down to defeat Club Brugge 2-1 and secure themselves first place in Europa League Group D. Brugge, who were certain to finish bottom of the standings no matter what happened this evening, took the lead through Dorge Kouemaha's 28th-minute diving header, but within six minutes already-qualified Villarreal were ahead thanks to Rossi. The Italy international drew the Spanish high-flyers level on the half-hour mark and then netted what would prove to be the winner from the penalty spot after he had been barged over inside the area by Ryan Donk. Villarreal's victory means they finish a point clear of second-placed PAOK Salonika, who joined the Yellow Submarine in the last 32 after beating Dinamo Zagreb. Brugge came into the match searching for their first win in Group D but they gave themselves a chance of ending that poor run by going ahead through Kouemaha's close-range finish. Jonathan Blondel's shot from the edge of the box was superbly tipped onto the crossbar by Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Lopez, but the Spain custodian was powerless to keep out the follow-up header from Kouemaha. The Belgian side's joy was short-lived, though, as they had no answer to the in-form Rossi. The former Manchester United man was denied by Geert de Vlieger in the 29th minute but 60 seconds later he left the Club Brugge goalkeeper with no chance to save as he headed home Joan Capdevila's left-wing cross from near the penalty spot. Villarreal created another chance almost immediately, Marco Ruben bringing another save out of De Vlieger, before Juan Carlos Garrido's men won a penalty. Rossi went crashing under the challenge of Donk, and he dusted himself down before firing past De Vlieger for his 13th goal in all competitions this season. Rossi came close to netting his hat-trick in the 49th minute but De Vlieger did well to block, while Ruben also saw an effort saved by the home goalkeeper later in the half as Villarreal sought to finish the game off. At the other end Ivan Perisic saw a 20-yard drive go just wide of the far top corner while Kouemaha will feel hard done by to have a late header ruled out for offside as winless Club Brugge slumped to their third defeat in six games.
