Match Preview

New Year`s Day dilemma for Sheridan The return to fitness of Dean Morgan gives Chesterfield boss John Sheridan a selection dilemma for the visit of Stockport. Sheridan must work out how to use Morgan. The winger or striker, who has recovered from a groin injury, has been superb when available. However, veteran Jack Lester and leading scorer Craig Davies look certain to start up front while wide midfielders Danny Whitaker and Drew Talbot do not deserve to miss out. Sheridan could move Whitaker into the centre but that would mean either Derek Niven or Mark Allott being left out, meaning Morgan may just have to wait his turn. Defender Jamie Lowry could be included in the squad following 14 months out with a knee injury. Stockport boss Paul Simpson will be reluctant to make any changes when his side visit the league leaders. County are in buoyant mood after winning 3-1 at Barnet on Tuesday and Simpson will look for more of the same against the Spireites. Right-back Mark Lynch is fit but may have to settle for a place on the bench again as Simpson's men look to build on their victory at Underhill. The Edgeley Park boss said: "We've picked up some really good results on the road, without doubt better than we have at home, and in a way it's a bit of a freebie because nobody gives us a prayer of getting anything. "So we'll go there, try and be as organised as we were at Barnet, and as committed and as ruthless as were too."

Match Report

Lester bags treble in Spireites win Jack Lester was the difference as Chesterfield overcame a spirited Stockport 4-1 side to stay on top of npower League Two. Lester celebrated a hat-trick to kill off Stockport who had levelled when a George Donnelly shot went in off Dwayne Mattis. Stockport started well and were denied an early lead when a Robbie Williams free-kick was brilliantly turned onto a post by Tommy Lee in the seventh minute. But Chesterfield's pace and power in attack opened the visitors up six minutes later and Dean Morgan's cross was headed in at the back post by Lester. Morgan almost set up a second before Stockport stunned the home side with a long ball that put Donnelly in and his second attempt found the net off Mattis. Craig Davies was foiled by an excellent save from Matt Glennon in the 49th minute but Lester restored Chesterfield's lead in the 62nd minute. The 35-year-old striker turned and glided away from three challenges before lifting the ball over the keeper and he bagged his third five minutes later after Glennon had parried a Davies header. Davies sealed an impressive second-half display with a 20-yard shot for his 15th of the season in the 90th minute.
